Summary

Russian AI developers are facing legal repercussions after their AI, named 'Kandinsky', generated unflattering and embarrassing images of President Putin, including him in his birthday suit, and incorrectly depicted the Russian flag.

Abstract

AI developers in Russia have been summoned to the Russian prosecutor's office for their chatbot, 'Kandinsky', creating and disseminating images that portray President Putin in compromising situations, such as being nude and in a prison cell. The AI also demonstrated an inability to accurately generate the Russian flag, instead adding elements like the domes of St Basil's Cathedral, which was perceived as mockery. This incident has led to the developers being disciplined for creating a negative image of Russia. The AI was a collaborative effort between Sberbank and Yandex, and as a result of the backlash, the developers have restricted the AI from generating state symbols and now provide predetermined images.

Opinions

  • The Kremlin is portrayed as being furious and offended by the AI-generated images of Putin.
  • The developers of the AI are implied to be in serious trouble, with their personal safety in 2024 hinted to be at risk.
  • The AI's incorrect depiction of the Russian flag is seen as a mockery of national symbols, which is a sensitive issue.
  • The developers' response to the incident suggests a need to comply with government expectations to avoid further repercussions.
  • There is an underlying tone of disapproval towards the Russian government's reaction to the AI's actions, with the use of terms like "naughty chatbot" and "negative image of Russia" potentially reflecting a critical view of censorship and freedom of expression in Russia.

AI developers in Russia are in hot water after their software developed images of the Russian leader without any clothes on.

The guilty chatbot, called ‘Kandisnsky’, has been charged with generating embarrassing images of the President and making a mockery of Russia.

Two images which made it onto public view were one cartoonised image of Putin in the nuddy carrying a stick, and another of him looking very worried in a prison cell.

It’s not clear how the images became public, but the naughty chatbot is being reined in by its developers, who themselves would probably like to make it to 2024 in one piece.

The chatbot also seems to be confused about the Russian flag. It creates an image in the wrong colours when asked to draw the Russian flag. However, it has mastered the art of creating the Ukrainian flag without any difficulty. This is not going well for the people who developed it.

The software was developed as a joint venture between Sberbank (a bank) and Yandex (a search engine). The developers were summoned to the Russian prosecutor’s office and disciplined for creating a ‘negative image of Russia’.

According to ShowBiz Bang, the Sherbank boss told the US Sun Newspaper: “We have a model for generating the Russian flag — well, it’s generative. It’s trying to improve it. It also drew domes from St Basil’s Cathedral on the flag. The deputies considered this to be a mockery of our national flag.

“We immediately stopped certain things — it no longer generates state symbols, it generates a predetermined picture.”
