$20K in course sales selling the lazy way
Don’t copy my formula

I really have never mastered course selling. I don’t know what it is.
You might see $20K in sales and think that’s amazing.

It’s definitely small potatoes, in my eyes.
Course creators hit $20K in sales on the first day of a launch, let alone, lifetime sales.
Here are some hard lessons I’ve learned in my 5+ years of selling courses.
I share this to be transparent and spread the knowledge I’ve learned about course selling so you can do better than me.
Here we go…
4 Lessons Learned Selling Online Courses
1. Course creation is hard
I always feel like I’m rushing when I’m developing courses. The process takes time. Don’t rush it and understand that it is hard, for everyone.
- Planning a curriculum
- Organizing lessons
- Filming or creating the content
- Editing
- Pricing
- Formatting and publication
It’s a process, for sure.
In the end, it’s hard. I realize that.
Once I understood that any new course I made was going to be hard and take time, it made the whole process feel more digestible. I didn’t feel like I was in a rat race.
2. Pricing is half the battle
Setting the right course price is super important. Think long and hard about this.
If you set the price too low, it’s seen as not valuable and won’t get you the sales you want. Price it too high, and it’s out of reach for your target audience.
So, in this phase of your course creation, take your time, research the market and your audience and find the right pricepoint that works!
3. Cheaper isn’t better
I’ve experienced a handful of situations where I tried offering a low price and was turned away.
Why?
Many reasons, including:
- Buyers thought it was a scam to give away such value at a small price
- Buyers thought that the material wasn’t valuable because the price was too low
Setting a high price can benefit you. It can be tempting to drop the price, thinking it’s a good move and will attract hordes of buyers.
It doesn’t always work out that way.
4. Marketing matters
Please don’t try to launch a course with no marketing. You have got to prepare a marketing plan in advance. Then, launch with that plan in play.
- Email marketing
- Influencer shoutouts
- Social media marketing
- Paid ads
There are so many marketing channels available. You don’t always have to worry about paid placements. There are plenty of organic options that won’t require you to spend a penny on advertising.
I failed to market the right way (and still struggle) and it has resulted in really low course sales.
TL;DR
I am proud to have reached 20K in course sales but, if I had done my course launches the right way, I think it could have been so much more.
There’s still time to correct my wrongs though.
- Rushing through creating courses
- Not paying attention to pricing
- Pricing courses too cheap
- Ignoring marketing
I’ve learned a lot and I’m still learning. Hope this helps you out in some way.
