10 Things I’ve Been Dying To Do
Inspired by Shanti C K…
I have Agoraphobia , and I haven’t left the house in over a year. It’s alarming, I know. Even as I type, I’m shocked myself.
It’s a debilitating disease, it robs you of your sense of self, and your freedom. It’s locked me in a cage, stuck with my own thoughts of failure every day. Every time I don’t succeed in leaving the house it’s another check in the “lose” column for me.
Sometimes I feel like the walls are closing in, and others I feel like my bedroom is the only safe place in the universe.
But I haven’t lost hope!
And I have Medium!
I was inspired by Shanti CK, and her story “Ten Things I Hope to Do When I Feel Better.”
So, I have made up my own list of 10 things (in no particular order) that I would love to do when I finally manage to leave.
1. Visit the beach. Any beach will do. The coastline is covered with them in Rhode Island. I miss the sand between my toes and the slight breeze that comes off the water. I don’t even care how cold it is or how choppy the waves get.
2. Go to the dentist! (I stole this one from Shanti.) I need to get a mouthguard. My anxiety causes me to grind my teeth in my sleep.
3. Sit in a café. As scary as that sounds right now, I used to love it. I want to just sit there and sip my latte, and snoop in on other people’s conversations.
4. Go for a car ride. I used to love driving around the Southside of Providence, looking at all of the Victorian houses. I’d imagine my husband and I renovating one of them someday.
5. Visit my in-laws. They are the most charming, down-to-earth people you could ever meet. And I haven’t seen them since my wedding.
6. Go on that honeymoon we never got to take. We got married in 2020, so our honeymoon plans got cancelled. But, I would love to stay, for just a couple nights, on the Canadian side of Niagara Falls.
7. Go shopping for Christmas presents. No one expects anything frivolous this year, not with the economy the way it is. But it just seems more personal to buy something and hold it in your hands. As opposed to the endless scrolling on Amazon.
8. Get clam cakes! If you are unfamiliar, they are delicious fried dough with clam bits. I miss them so much. They are a staple for Rhode Islanders.
9. Drive our car. We bought a new Jeep (new to us) two years ago, and I’ve only driven it once! I used to love driving, and it’s the first car I’ve ever had with a sunroof.
10. Go to an arts and crafts store. I’m an artist, and I haven’t created anything in a while. I’d love to wander the aisles and feel inspired again!
Wish me luck!
