That Condescending Prick!
Deb was ready to put her foot down…
This story is a response to Fiction Short November Prompts (15), written by Nancy Oglesby at Fiction Shorts.
Deb plopped down across from Dennis in the break room and hung her head. She unzipped her lunch bag and pulled out a sandwich.
“Egg-salad, again…” she muttered under her breath.
“You feelin’ ok Deb?” Dennis asked.
“I don’t know Dennis, I’m just so sick of Charlie micromanaging me. It’s as though I can’t stock a shelf or something.”
“Yeah he has a tendency to do that.”
“But, it’s like he’s singled me out or something. He’s so much worse with me. I’ve been working in the warehouse for fifteen years, and I’m old enough to be his mother!”
“Do you think that maybe he’s trying to prove himself?”
Deb took a bite of her sandwich as she contemplated Dennis’s observation. She chewed slowly.
“It would make sense, but if that’s the case he should pick on someone his own size. That condescending prick!”
“Whoa Deb, you’re being a little harsh there dontcha’ think…”
“He watched me stock light bulbs for five minutes this morning, and he pointed out every time I didn’t have the label facing forward… you tell me!”
“Ok, well you have a point there…”
“You know what Dennis, I’m going to give him a piece of my mind. And I’m gonna do it right now. I’ve had it!”
“I’ll show you how to stock a lightbulb…” Deb started muttering under her breath as she stood up.
Deb began stomping out of the break room, headed towards the manager’s office.
“You gonna eat the rest of that egg-salad sandwich?” Dennis yelled after her.
“All yours Dennis!”
“Yummy!”
