WRITING TIPS
Your Writing Doesn’t Have to Be a Masterpiece
When writing, it doesn’t have to be a masterpiece; you just need to get started.
One of the biggest challenges is consistency when just starting back to writing or even starting for the first time.
Consistency and just getting started allude almost every writer at some time or another. Even seasoned and established writers will likely tell you it happens to them occasionally.
The second and, for me, the more debilitating part of the writing process is to get out of my head and realize that when I sit down to write, it does not have to be a novel. It does not have to be two thousand words. It can even be a few words if it is a haiku or short-content.
Another thing that I have to remind myself when I sit down to write is that when I write, I don’t have to change the world with my prose.
I don’t even have to sway opinion or thinking.
I don’t have to say something that has not been said before by someone else using other words.
I don’t have to write a masterpiece. I just have to share my words and thoughts and get some typing on the page.
I struggle with what I call “masterpiece” syndrome quite a bit.
When I sit down at my computer, or even when I might let Siri dictate the words, I struggle so much with what to say.
No, it’s not that I don’t have anything to say; anyone knowing me would tell you that, but I try to make it perfect instead of just doing it.
Well, I will not give you a list of tips right now to get past your own “masterpiece” syndrome or your desire for perfection. I may do that later, but only if I figure it out myself.
I will tell myself in the mirror and to you, the reader and maybe the writer, to do it. Hit the keyboard, hit record, get the pen and paper out, or whatever your choice for writing, and just get started.
Don’t try to write a masterpiece, a moment-changing piece of content, or bring someone to tears with your work. Just let your mind wander, get your thoughts on the page, then stand back and watch them come alive.
Let the words you typed or transcribed come alive on the page. Then and only then will you have created a masterpiece. Your masterpiece of writing, at least for today!
In Closing
Getting started writing is what I had to do this morning, and if that is your plan for the day, you should clap for this post (if you desire), maybe leave a comment (again, if you choose), and open a new page, and get started writing. I can’t wait to read what you share!
