PRODUCTIVITY
Your Real Job Is to Be Consistent, Not Perfect
Focus and repetition are keys.
Perfection is an illusion created for your ego to protect you. But let’s be honest, how many times you avoid tasks or believe it is not the perfect time lying and aiming for perfection when you deeply inside know you never will.
I often quit projects that I really loved just for the sake that I wasn’t ready to pay the price that it was required. Giving excuses, thinking that is not the right time, or with doubts in mind.
“Have no fear of perfection — you’ll never reach it.“— Salvador Dali.
The better approach in life is not to aim to get things done perfectly. Your goal in life should be kept consistently.
When I started to write here on this platform, I didn’t even know how to formulate a structured sentence without putting in too many words. That wasn’t very reassuring. I couldn’t even understand what I was writing. But I made a promise to write every day per 6 months.
I promise myself whatever happened; I will stick on it and not give up. I am still working on it; there were moments when I felt that it doesn’t make sense, but I remember my promise, and I keep showing up.
If you focus on improving yourself at least 1% better from yesterday, you will be stunned of the results that you will get, it is unbelievable.
People are not ready to pay the price and take that decision. But let’s be honest without consistency, you can’t do anything; think in this way:
- Can you be a good writer, writing one day a week?
- Can you be a good speaker training a day per month?
- Can you lose weight being on a diet only twice a week?
The answer is clearly a big Not. You must be consistent in everything you do if you want great results.
Consistency gives you confidence, and confidence gives you the freedom to make better decisions.
Let's break this down.
Practice Something Once Is like doing nothing
As clear as that, if you are going to the gym once a week, you will not look like Arnold Schwarzenegger; you need to keep doing every day in life.
The same concept works for everything. This is a unique way to get success in any area of your life. Consistency is the ability to repeat an action or a routine over a period of time.
I certainly believe than talent is just the result of practice and consistency. If someone shows me it is not, I will change my mind.
Promise yourself to be better than yesterday, and you will see how good you become in a year.
Consistency is the key to success in life. Even if you don’t know something, you will see how you can become a master in a different area in your life with practice and repetition.
If you only do what you feel like…You don’t do enough
There are moments in life when you don't want to do tasks that you have to. We all have it. When you feel excited go to the gym, and the first week was amazing, and after that, you started to feel that it is too much.
Your body hurts, you need to keep doing, but you prefer to go to the closest bar to grab a beer instead of working out.
The difference between successful people and the average people is that they work and keep going even when they don’t feel they wanted.
You will have difficult times when you don’t want to do anything; those moments are when you realized if you are committed to doing it.
I am not a role model to anyone; I have two daughters at home, and sometimes it isn't easy to find time to write. Sometimes I am writing when they are playing loud close to me. I get used to writing in those conditions. If you asked me if it is comfortable, of course, it is not. But is what I have, and I am grateful for it.
So when you feel tired, keep working
When you are blocked and you don’t feel to write, keep writing.
If you are a painter and you feel that creativity abandon you keep painted.
Don’t wait for inspiration. Maybe it will never show up.
The first days are the hardest
Nobody said it would be easy; if you want to get results, you have to change your habits and change the way you think. You will ingrain new habits in your subconscious, and they will be rejected for sure.
In the beginning, don’t wait to have a pleasant moment because you won't have it. Be aware that a hard time will come.
It takes 66 days for a new habit to keep in your subconscious; before that, you will want to reject them. Keep in mind that. And when you feel you are not good enough, is not you. It is a normal process that is happening inside of you.
After that, you will see how easily are you keep doing it. It just a matter of time. To be consistent is a must to be committed to it.
If you are not committed to being consistent, better do not waste your time.
Sometimes consistency will make you feel like a loser
How many times I felt this when I saw my medium status, I promise myself to keep going in my writing routine, to keep writing. Then you see people are doing better, and you don’t get the results you wanted (I still have that feeling sometimes), and right away, I started to think is part of the process.
Now I stopped to pay attention to it. I say to myself. I am committed to doing this, I am far from being a prolific writer, but I am doing my best daily.
Just a tiny goal to be better than yesterday, learn something new, and think where you can apply it in your daily life has tremendous results. You will see it.
In Conclusion
In each area of our life, in a relationship in your work everywhere, if you keep focusing on the consistency, you will improve, no matter what. You will see how your skills are getting better and expand. Remember that perfection is an illusion created for your ego.
With consistency, you can change the world. You can change and create new habits; you can avoid bad ones and get better at whatever you want. Committed to it is the key. And be aware that it is not an easy process than everyone is ready to trade-off. But it is definitively worthy.
