Introduction

This is article two of a two-article series. This article will examine some of my favorite mountains in Alaska and other things I have enjoyed outdoors. I hope you enjoy reading this article series and may consider visiting these locations when and if you are near the areas I have covered.

Alaska

The mountains in Alaska hold a special place in my heart. I enjoyed the Chugach mountains in Alaska and visited an abandoned silver mine in Hatchers Pass, Alaska. My family and I also climbed a mountain very near our home.

Favorite Trip

My all-time favorite trip was to the Great One, Mount McKinley or Denali, and Wonder Lake just below the mountain. My family and I lived in Alaska and could see this beautiful mountain through our living room picture window. It was truly mesmerizing to get close to this mountain.

There are many great things about visiting Denali and Wonder Lake. You can take a bus from the visitors’ center to the lake, and then if you want to go hiking, you could hike closer to the mountain. You cannot drive to the lake as a rule.

The Denali National Park Road Lottery is a unique 5-day event in Denali National Park. Visitors can drive their vehicles down the 92-mile park road to Kantishna. These are the only time personal vehicles are allowed to go past Savage River.

The National Park Service offers limited permits to drive the road each year through an online lottery system. To go any further, you must take the bus or get special permission and drive your vehicle (only so many people per year are allowed to do the drive. The National Park Service holds a lottery that interested people put in for.

The National Park Service pulls names randomly to choose who can do the drive. The other option (taking the bus) means you don’t need to drive the narrow road. You have an improved vantage because you sit up high and see wildlife milling about. The pictures below are examples of wildlife seen from the bus.

My family and I rented a cabin outside the park but took the bus through the park to Wonder Lake. We also went horseback riding and white-water rafting in the same area. We had a wonderful time together doing things that make Alaska a special place to live.

Other interesting facts about Denali State Park are that people can backpack, tent camp, sleep under the stars, go canoeing, fish, kayak, rock climb, and go sightseeing. Denali State Park — Wikipedia

Other Things I Have Enjoyed Outdoors

Some things I enjoy while outdoors include the woodsy, green scents, the aroma of the forest during the varying seasons, and the flowering of many plants. These things combine to have a pleasant effect on me. The sweet fragrance of mountainous regions with flora like wild azaleas, lovely shrubs, mountain laurels, rhododendrons, and spicebushes is a unique natural wonder not to be missed. Plants release volatile organic compounds into the mountain air.

Walking in the mountains is like a smorgasbord for our senses, especially the various smells and sights. The air in the mountains is crisp and clean, less polluted. Most mountain locations are far from commercial and industrial centers. This fact alone means the air is fresher.

The scenery in the mountains is unmatched. If you are quiet while walking, you may see wildlife such as deer, bighorn sheep, and God Forbid — bears! You could also see elk, moose, beaver, and birds of various colors, shapes, and sizes. Incredibly, I have seen animals and plants in the mountains that I have never seen at lower elevations.

The mountains are a bonanza of terrific animal sights; just be sure to research before visiting to know what to do when you come close to wildlife and any other danger or concern. Remember, it’s their home; we are just visitors. Treating their home with respect is very important!

If you are lucky enough to see a mother and baby of any animal, please remember that Mom does not know why you are there, so don’t be stupid and try to pet or take pictures with the baby because Mom may think you are trying to hurt the little one and take revenge.

Other things I have done while in or near the mountains are white water rafting, which is fun when everyone follows the safety rules, and horseback riding, which takes you to places you otherwise may never see. My wife and I rode mules to the canyon’s bottom in Molokai, Hawaii, to visit a leper colony. I plan to write another story to share this experience with readers.

I have fished in various rivers and lakes. I also enjoy hiking trails that take me to waterfalls and immense vistas, backpacking, camping, picnicking at numerous locations, building a bonfire, and sitting around and talking with friends. For the adventurous, going snow sledding, cross-country skiing, walking on a glacier, and hiking to a waterfall are rewards of the outdoor experience. I loved it when I could do these things with friends, family, or both. I have visited a gold mine in Arizona and Colorado and a silver mine in Alaska.

I have traveled to mountainous areas, walked, and found a comfortable sitting place. I would sit and listen to the sounds of nature, skip stones on ponds, walk on the trails and pathways, and enjoy the solitude and tranquility of just being away from the busyness of life and the noise associated with it.

The times that I have been lucky enough to locate a mountain stream and enjoy listening to the water as it cascaded over the rocks in the stream bed are unmatched. I can’t think of anywhere else I have ever been that was as quiet, provided the water is not a torrent. The sound of the water moving over the rocks in the stream is complete relaxation. I will never forget putting my aching feet into the mountain streams; it was like heaven on earth.
