As I am going to complete a decade-long career in IT next month, I still remember my first day at Tata Consultancy Services — Chennai. I had mixed feelings as I set foot on the campus in Chennai, India.

As the first person engineer from my family, I was so excited to start my new job, against all odds. But at the same time, I was very nervous. Did I have the skills and talent to succeed? What if I am not talented enough to get the work along with many other apprehensions one could think of like 20 years old self.

And now, nearly 12 years later, I can’t help but gasp in amazement about how my fear was turned on its head. During that first day, I met other new employees from all walks of life and was surprised to discover that we shared the same self-doubt.

In the process of getting to know everyone and some of them become friends for life. Right away, we started to feel like a family and a community — and when the day ended, I had formed strong bonds that I knew were going to last lifelong.

As I am thinking and recalling my last ten-year journey, I no longer felt like I had to prove myself in every single way. I thanked the company for giving me this fantastic opportunity and given me a platform to work with talented people from across the globe.

Since joining my first company, I’ve gained the confidence I needed from having a workplace and culture where I can thrive. I feel seen, empowered, and included in this environment to contribute as much as anyone else. I honestly have some of the best colleagues I could have ever asked for, and I can count on them for anything.

It helped me to take a bigger risk in life and prepared me for any unprecedented situation.

During pandemic, I used this time to improve my work-life balance and to help me ensure my physical and mental well-being. More importantly, I was able to continue working and do what I enjoy and fulfilling at the same time. It’s meant a lot to me.

Through our individual challenges and victories, our stories can build a quilt to cover one another.

As someone coming from a background of little means who has braved many odds and challenged the status quo to chase my dreams, I understand the importance of helping others who face adversity and disadvantages. It gives me all the more reasons to help the people unlock their true potential.

Today, I use my social media presence to help inspire others through my profiles on LinkedIn, Instagram, and Twitter. My shared experiences show that it’s normal to go through these life struggles. Through our challenges and victories, our stories can build a quilt to cover one another.

That sense of sharing and bringing others along with you is part of who I am. “I am, because of who we are.” It’s ingrained in me to build community and to help and uplift others.

Even if we feel like we achieved something by ourselves, there’s always somebody rooting for you or willing to give you a chance.

She’s the one who’ll climb up the corporate or social ladder of her choosing. Rung by rung, she’ll rise to leave an indelible mark in her slice of the world.

The best news? You, too, can transform into such. Remember, you also have a bag of tricks. It’s time to get them out, harness them, become the person you’ve always admired and watch your life transform.
