You Can Always Find Me Here After I Pass
Immortality of the soul

During a magical 5-mile run with my 16-year-old daughter through Ancil Hoffman Park, which I call my slice of Paradise, I told Sophia that she would always find me here after I passed.
Silence spread across the trail like a perfectly rolled out picnic blanket — our footsteps murmured on the soft dirt, our breaths heavy with sighs, our hearts louder than the squirrels squirming through the leaves, and the woodpeckers pecking in the most upbeat rhythm, after which my daughter’s voice choked with the heaviness of being, resurfaced above our cadenced steps: “Oh, that’s so sweet, Mom!”
“But, don’t worry! I plan to live to 100, so that’s a long time from now, my sweet daughter.” I will always be in nature as a wisp of wisdom ready to console, converse, and convert matter into spirit, time into sweet, elastic memories, sadness into serenity, grey clouds of sorrow into swirls of pink cotton candy long days of longing into sublime moments full of my infinite love for you.
I will be here, there, and everywhere!
My daughter and I ran together twice this week. For the first time, she ran my favorite 5-mile loop in this whole world through my slice of Paradise. Out of the blue, I blurted out: “you can always find me here after I pass.”
I felt her sadness and offered her reassurance. At the same time, as I turn 50 this year in June and feel more cognizant about my own mortality, I wanted Sophia to know where to come and talk to me about everything that burdened her soul.
I dedicate this poem to both my sweet Sophia and Alex so that they know where to find me when I am no longer here. I remember how difficult it was to lose my dad when he was only 53 years old, and I was only 25. I did not know how to console my soul until my father showed up in my dreams smiling and happy.
After all, we are here, there, and everywhere. Being prepared is a good thing. Thanks so much for reading and enjoying my poem! Running often turns on my poetic wheels and will — pun intended.
Way to battle for the light, Dr. Gabriella Korosi! I enjoyed the “unbearable lightness of being” in your poem very much!
And what a great way to spring from winter’s gloom with NancyO! Superb!
