Writing Does Feel Like Staring Down A Monster On Some Days

What to do when you’re facing your deepest writing demons

Background photo created by kjpargeter

You’re deep in the thick of resistance about putting pen to paper?

You’re not alone. There are a lot of writers on this platform who struggle with this as well.

Even Top Writer Sean Kernan with 66K followers shared this tweet yesterday:

It’s hard to imagine that Sean also feels stuck from time to time.

Knowing that he made it gives hope to us who are stuck.

Writing can feel paralyzing

I experience also some moments when I can’t think of anything.

Lately, I was feeling a bit under the weather and couldn’t focus or even think of what to write.

Writing seemed paralyzing.

It’s not that you can’t write. You somehow don’t want to write. It’s strange.

You don’t get it. You’re creative. You have so many stories to tell.

Still, the words are just not coming out of you.

What to do when you’re facing your deepest writing demons and writing feels like staring down a monster?

Step away from your writing

Instead of doing anything, don’t do a thing.

Writing can be vulnerable.

Sharing difficult moments of your life with others isn’t for the faint of heart.

Sometimes you have to take a few steps away from writing and just go inwards and find your inner writing piece.

We all need to do some writing soul-searching sometimes to find out who we are and what we want to bring into the world.

It’s worth digging out your better, deeper self. That’s where the gold is.

During the Medium Writers Challenge, I felt stuck several times. I had to step away from my writing to come in a flow state again.

I wrote a tribute to my granddad for the prompt #Death and a true story about my almost failed marriage for writing prompt #Space.

My learning: If you dare to be vulnerable, even show your face this can be a growth opportunity and lead to the best stories.

Final Takeaways

You’re only flesh and blood, like anyone else.

Writing isn’t all rainbows and sunshine.

I think it shows in our writing if our heart is in it or not.

I find it best to give myself a break from writing and then come back later.

When I do, I come back with renewed energy.
