Wow! I Just Hit 600 Followers!

Tips and tricks for improving your online presence

Photo by Anika Huizinga on Unsplash

I’ve only been posting on Medium regularly for the last six weeks, and I’ve been completely overwhelmed by this platform. I already wrote about how I earned over $50 my first month, and in my second month I’m well on pace to joining the top 5.4% of Medium earners by crossing the $100 threshold.

Although $100 does not seem like a lot of money, it’s a very encouraging development. I do not believe the earnings will stay at that level if I do not continue to write regularly, but passive income that is enough to pay a phone bill is nothing to sneeze at.

I think part of my success is attributable to the fact that I just hit 600 followers. A lot of my impressions of Medium are nothing more than speculation, but it seems logical to conclude that the more followers you have, the more your stories will be read.

Leaving comments

Previously I wrote an article about how writing comments on stories is a great way to get new followers.

It’s pleasing to see that the tactic is totally working!

On most days, I try to engage with anywhere from five to ten articles. I like writing comments to provide encouragement, and most often you can expect a writer to reply.

Keep in mind that you have a better chance of getting a reply if you comment on the work of a lesser known author. Some of the writers for the big publications get thousands of notifications a day. Even if they do attempt to reply to them all, it’s easy to pass over notifications once you start to click on them in your dashboard.

Following people who clap

One of the best tactics for gaining new followers is to find articles you like, clap for them, and then follow all the other readers who clapped.

If you click on the number of claps you are taken to a list that shows all the fans of the article.

This list represents groups of people that have engaged with the article that you enjoyed and probably have a similar mindset to you. I know that whenever somebody follows me, I like to pop over to their profile page and have a look at their recent work. When you follow others, they tend to pop over and have a look at you.

Writing great content for big publications

By far the best way to get followers is to earn visibility through big publications. My most popular article is about the lessons I learned from a year of content writing, and I consistently see new claps and followers that I attribute to that article.

It takes a bit of time to write every day, but Medium is a very engaging platform with a vibrant community that provides a lot of encouragement.

A smarter class of reader

The other day I wrote this satirical piece just to see what kind of a response I would get.

I’m used to being rather antagonistic on Facebook, so I figured I’d get some irritated responses here. However, the comments were all very complimentary, and the people who engaged seemed to have both understood and appreciated the satirical quality of the piece.

It’s gratifying to see that the individuals who make up the Medium community seem to be intelligent readers.

With all of the lunacy in politics and the media today, it’s nice to have a small refuge on the internet where sanity reigns supreme.

Looking forward to the next 600 followers

I’ve found that you can establish a very strong foundation on Medium very quickly, and success seems to build on itself. I’m fairly certain that the time it takes to get my next 600 followers will be cut in half from the first 600, and subsequent increases are likely to be halved again.

The more followers you have, the greater the chance that your articles will make an impression.

The important thing to remember about Medium is that you are only going to get followers if you take the time to engage with other writers. This is a wonderful community. Thanks for the follows, and good luck in your writing pursuits!
