Men’s Tennis World Number One Novax Djokovic is currently being held in an Immigration Detention Centre in Melbourne Australia, after being refused entry into the country to play at the 2022 Australian Open of Tennis.

The player had sought a medical exemption to play at the tournament from Tennis Australia, who had then applied to the Victorian State Government for approval on his behalf, which was refused. Under Australian Federal Law, any individual wanting to enter the country from overseas must declare their proof of vaccination status, or apply for a medical exemption from the Federal Government’s Border Force. Novax, who has point blank refused to provide any information regarding his vaccination status, boarded a plane to Melbourne earlier this week, despite not being given the correct approval prior to his leaving.

While Tennis Australia has been silent on the issue, the Australian Prime Minister has played both sides. Less than 24 hours before Novax arrived in Melbourne, the PM Scott Morrison announced to the media that the Victorian Government had approved the player’s exemption (it hadn’t).
