Why am I the Only One Wearing a Mask?
How can you work in the medical profession and not understand basic medicine?
I had to go to my local doctor today to have a physical for some upcoming work. Easy process, book online, answer some quick questions, and then turn up 10 minutes early. As I have written elsewhere, where I live in Australia, we have only had 7 deaths from Covid since the pandemic began — you can read about it here when the US Army almost invaded — but with our state opening up the borders last Monday, (just in time to welcome Omicron), things are changing fast. Our state Chief Health Officer announced Thursday that masks would be mandated as of the following Saturday morning, along with a return to QR Code check-ins and a general plea for handwashing and being nice to each other. Similarly, unvaccinated people will not be allowed into places like restaurants, cafes, pubs, and theatres, unless they have an official exemption from the State Government.
So, imagine my surprise on walking into the clinic and seeing a full waiting room of about 15 people ranging in ages from young adults to the elderly, and I was the only one wearing a mask, other than the Doctors and staff.
I had to wait for 40 minutes, and during that time, only one other person walked in with a mask on.
Eventually, I was called in and the nurse started prepping me for my bloods. I told her about the mask situation in the waiting room and she laughed and said people just don’t get it. Her theory was that because we have had excellent leadership from our scientific community within the government, we have been protected from much of the harsh realities of Covid, and as a result, people don’t understand just how bad catching Covid could be.
That made sense. According to the nurse, there is a whole group of people living on the edge, putting us all at risk, by not complying with basic health/scientific directions.
But that wasn’t her biggest worry. The biggest problem, she said, is the qualified nurses and doctors that are not vaccinated and are spreading anti-vaccination information in the wider community. I pressed her on what she meant, and she said, “I don’t understand how you can have a job, based on medical science that requires a minimum of 4 years of training involving high levels of scientific knowledge to gain qualifications, and then not only not understand the science, but actively tell lies about it?”
“How can you work in the medical profession and not understand basic medicine?”
I laughed, and said good point!
Then she jabbed me in the arm.
So, let’s keep supporting our health professionals they’re doing it tough, and maybe, stand up and call out the “unprofessionals” when you see one!
Oh, and wear a mask!
