Elon Musk: Have More Kids or Our Civilization Crumbles

Why does he hate planet Earth so much?

We only have one planet, we need to take better care of it (Photo by Photo Boards on Unsplash)

As reported by CNBC, tech billionaire Elon Musk has declared that civilization on this planet will crumble if the birth rate is not lifted.

With over 7 billion people currently inhabiting the planet, climate change impacts rapidly speeding up, and in the midst of the greatest extinction event the planet has ever seen, Musk has gone against many leading scientists and called on people to have more kids, not less.

Speaking at a Wall Street Journal event, Musk said there are not enough people on the planet. Channeling his inner Trump, Musk stated that too many “good, smart people” think there are too many people in the world and that the population is growing out of control”.

“It’s completely the opposite,” Musk said, urging people to look at the data. “If people don’t have more children, civilization is going to crumble. Mark my words.”

The surrounding ecosystem of Boca Chica, Texas is at danger of being polluted by the SpaceX program (Photo by SpaceX on Unsplash).

Musk’s “rocket envy” is damaging the planet.

Musk, and fellow billionaires Richard Branson and Jeff Bezos are currently participating in a dick-swinging rocket contest to see who can get to Mars first. Suffering from massive rocket envy, these three men are speeding up the climate change process by increasing the amount of Carbon Dioxide and other gasses in the earth’s atmosphere, with every launch.

The Guardian reports that one rocket launch alone can release up to 300 tons of Carbon Dioxide into the earth’s upper atmosphere and it can stay there for years. This is in comparison to a standard long haul flight which produces 3 tons of Carbon Dioxide per passenger/per flight, into the lower atmosphere. These impacts do not include what happens on the ground during a launch, including the heat and noise pollution in the immediate area, or the impacts on local wildlife.

These issues are already being felt near the SpaceX launch site in Texas, which is surrounded by state and federally protected lands including the delicate ecosystem of the Boca Chica tract of the Lower Rio Grande Valley national wildlife refuge which contains tidal flats, beaches, grasslands, coastal dunes, and a huge range of wildlife. In March 2021 a SpaceX rocket blew up on launch, and debris was scattered throughout the protected area. According to a local non-profit environmental group, it took 3 months to clean up the mess.

Similarly, launch site ditches on SpaceX land and public property, have dumped runoff water directly into the tidal flats threatening local fish breeding grounds, and public beaches and roads have been closed for longer than the agreed times.

At an earlier launch in 2018, a jettisoned SpaceX booster rocket missed its target drone ship a few 100 kilometres out to sea and destroyed itself on impact slamming into the ocean at 500 km/hour.

It is apparent that Musk sees the increasing amount of pollution produced by his space endeavours as little more than collateral damage, and less of a threat to our civilization than over-population.

Good Question? (Screen grab @elonofficiall)

If life is just about problems, what’s the point of living?” (Elon Musk, official Instagram, September 12, 2021).

When asked what he thought of public criticism of the “Billionaires in Space” being wasteful, in an interview posted to his official insta account back in September 2021, Musk basically dodged the question, claiming a higher purpose. In the brief clip, Musk agrees that we have problems to fix on this planet, and that the economy should be used to fix these problems, however, he then asks the viewer to think of a future where we are a “spacefaring civilisation and a multi-planet species”.

While that future might seem pretty exciting to your average sci-fi fan, that future doesn’t exist UNLESS we do something to fix the only planet we have NOW!

Despite what Mr Musk says, at this stage, there is no Planet B (Photo by Markus Spiske on Unsplash)

There is no Planet B

As a species, we have over-populated this planet:

  • We have very few natural predators left to keep our numbers down (other than ourselves).
  • Due to the great advances in medical science, we are living longer.
  • We are quickly running out of the natural resources we require to survive, including clean air and water.

Our only biosphere is in trouble and the science is clear; fewer people and cleaner energy are required if we are to survive as a species on this planet.

Instead of turning his immense intelligence (and wealth) to solving our current problems, Elon Musk (and his Billionaire Space Mates) seek to exacerbate these problems by polluting the planet further and encouraging over-population.

Musk’s (and others) pursuit of infinite growth is killing the planet, and our civilization is crumbling because we have too many people, not less.

And you can just bet that once they find what they’re looking for, they’ll leave us all behind to clean up their mess.
