Winter’s not dead

Paraphrasing the punks, winter might seem dead but it of course ain’t. I went for a small hike for evidence of thriving and striving life.

Winter’s not dead

Here it is, the product of the fall followed by over a month of winter. Grey and naked as if life had been obliterated.

Luckily, that’s just an effect of the deciduous trees. Funny: the word “deciduous” makes me think of “deceptive”. Are these trees deceiving us to think everything is dead?

Greens

But it’s not only deciduous trees in these forests. There are also many perennials. Pine trees at higher altitudes, and evergreen bushes and small trees around here:

Wild blackberries are also always green:

One inch under

There are also some less obvious signs of life. These little accumulations of soil right above the surface point at organic activity underground:

Decomposing branches and leaves are rich in bacteria, worms and other bugs that are digesting them to produce the nurture for the plants that will grow next spring.

Just like the compost you can make at home:

Marvels

If you remove the layer of surface leaves, more life becomes exposed. Even seeds sprouting already in the middle of the winter!

Talking about sprouts I was thrilled to see this one so early:

“Lower” lifeforms

But by no reason simple, actually quite complex! Like lichens and mosses:

Sometimes in turn mosses support small plants that surprise you:

White

Even in the snow, life including upper plants and animals survive. Check out the story about this hike for more:

It’s just a matter of looking carefully.
