Wicca For the ADHD Mind.

Ways to simply our practice without any hassle.

There are tons of books about ADHD and tons of information on Wicca on the web. But there is none for those of us Witches who have the condition.

If you are a witch with ADHD, you know what I mean.

I have decided to write this because I know that there are Pagans and Wiccans with ADHD, and they might have issues with the following that I am going to mention here.

I have decided to write this because I know that there are Pagans and Wiccans with ADHD, and they might have issues with the following that I am going to mention here.

The good thing about being a witch with ADHD is using your hyper-focused superpower in your ritual, spells, and meditation.

But the cons are: forgetting the coven rituals’ time and day; if you are solitaire the motivation to do spells and rituals altogether; Communicating with your coven members, Impulse spending on items, the clutter on our altars, rooms, and ritual area, and the constant distractions that interrupt your practice.

So you have read all the books on the beginner's guide to Wicca and are ready to become one. Of course, the first thing you would do is run out and spend it all on all things Witchcraft. Then you end up broke. Here are a few budget-friendly ways to save money on Witchy items:

Wands: You can go outside or use your index finger for this one; if not, put in some effort when looking for sticks outdoors.

Candles: Use flameless LED ones instead of candles that require matches.

Altar: Use your table or another countertop. Crystals: Get an ordinary rock outside.

Herbs: Don’t go out and buy a whole catalog of them. Just go to your grocery store and buy a few of what they have.

Book of Spells or finding them on the Internet: You can create your spells with your ingredients. But first, you need to know how to make a spell.

Book of Shadows: Any kind of journal will do.

Statues of Gods and Goddesses: You can print the images from the internet.

Incense: You don’t necessarily have to use this.

Cauldron: You can use any bowl from your kitchen.

Athame: Use an ordinary knife.

Chalice: Get a glass from your kitchen.

Stuff represents the four elements: I mentioned rocks and flameless candles, you can get a bird’s feather from the ground, or an empty glass to mean the air and the dirt from your lawn or garden.

There are many more items that you can replace with something that you use every day. So you don’t have to go out and buy a whole lot of witchy stuff when you have things around your house like salt shakers for earth/water (or sea).

Meditation

A big thing about being Pagan is meditation. We need to ground ourselves and focus on our intentions regarding spells and rituals. For some of us ADHDers whose superpower is hyper-focusing, this is great. But for those who can’t sit still even for five minutes, here are some alternative meditations you can do:

  • Go outside in nature and take a walk. This is one way for you to calm down, move around, and get some exercise at the same time. From personal experience, it does calm your mind.
  • Meditate by cleaning your house.
  • Cooking meditation. Some people do feel calm when they make a meal.
  • Eating meditation. This one is where you use your five senses when you eat something healthy.
  • Do other alternative forms of mindfulness such as yoga or tai chi.

The only downside to the moving meditations is that you can only do this when you are at home and not in a coven. So you would have to figure out a way to meditate without disturbing the person next to you.

Setting Up and Cleaning Your Altar

Two ADHD issues come into play when it comes to creating your altar. One, as you already know, is impulse spending. The other is clutter.

You can have a lot of things on your altar and leave it that way if you wish. But if you want an altar that is clutter-free, then less is more. For example, don’t put too many candles on it; just put at least three. Or you can have a chalice and blade on there with candles, your deity, and nothing else. It’s all up to you.

The next issue with altars is to remember to clean them often. You don’t want to get that all dusty.

Being a Solitaire.

There are many reasons why someone wants to be a solitary witch. One example is that you live in a small town without a coven. But if you have ADHD, you will have problems with impulse spending and forget when it’s time for rituals and spells because of the lack of routine or structure in your life.

I know that some books are out there that will tell you precisely when, where, and what time to do specific spellwork. One problem with that is if you know something about Astrology and find out that you have a spell you wanted at 1 a.m. on a Wednesday, and then the following day has an 8-hour work shift — it’s not going to happen! So while I’m aware of these books, they aren’t necessary for me because I consider my personal needs before casting any spells or doing anything magical in general.

But do not obey every word of that spellbook that you are reading. You can do that spell anytime you want. It could be now. As for the Sabbats and Esbats, it’s best to find a calendar that works for you, whether electronic or not, to remember when they are.

Covens

The best way to find a coven in your area is through Social Media. There are tons of Pagan Groups out there that you can join.

As mentioned before, it is hard to find one in a small town. One way for you to find out if there are any covens in the area you’re going to move into is by asking an FB Pagan group whether they have members that live near where you plan on moving and then contacting them.

From personal experience, my hometown is Calgary, Alberta, Canada. I was a part of a coven there. Then I moved to a small town in another province and found out that there were no Pagan groups nearby, so it took me a while to find one, but eventually, I did.

But that coven didn’t last long. It became a once-a-month talk about pop culture and ate at a restaurant. I think that went on for two or three years until it disbanded due to a lack of interest.

I moved back to Calgary after I got laid off from my job. But before I moved, I found out that my original coven disbanded in 2019 because not many people were coming to rituals anymore. So now I am without a coven and have no idea what direction or how much time it will take for me to find one again.

Covens and Communication.

Another issue with ADHD is our communication skills. We do talk a lot to the point it becomes a monologue. We interrupt. We don’t read other witches’ body language. And some of us are late getting to the ritual on time. Resulting in us sitting out and watching all the other witches have fun. The latter happened to me because of a fellow Pagan traveler.

Unfortunately, there is only one ADHD book on social skills that you can buy and learn to do independently. It’s called What does everybody else know that I don’t? By Michele Novotini, Ph. D. You do need to practice with a loved one how to communicate with others properly, so you can carry out conversations successfully!

There are some unspoken rules that I can mention here, though. Before you go to your coven meeting or ritual:

  • Make sure that you take shower.
  • Brush your teeth.
  • Comb your hair.
  • Put on deodorant (Not the ones with perfumes in them).
  • Ensure that there are no wrinkles in your clothes (Which I know for someone with ADHD is hard to notice).

Yes, even in the Pagan community, people do judge you on your looks. No one likes it when you go there looking frumpy.

Doing your Spells

I know that there are tons of spells on the internet that you can do for ADHD, for example. But, unfortunately, you did your research and went impulse spending on items you don’t have to do. But did you know that you can create a spell on your own and without spending a dime?

All you need is a few ingredients around your house and your intentions. If you still insist on doing spells that you get from the internet, you can substitute a green candle for a white one. Or a herb that you don’t have to the ones that you do.

Being a Kitchen Witch.

This is not me, but for those of you who like to cook. For one thing, you do have to have a distraction-free kitchen while cooking. That means no smartphones or landline ones, and let your family members know not to bother you.

When it comes to growing your garden, there is forgetting when to water your plants. The best thing to do is find a way to remember how much and when to garden and water them. You might also need a way to remind you to do that, whether through a calendar or a To-Do list.

Conclusion

Well, I hope that you ADHD witches out there take my advice. But, unfortunately, none of these are foolproof, so you have to go and see what is good for you.

I did also recently check google ADHD spells. They are out there, but there aren’t many. You can also search for productivity spells, motivation, and more related to specific ADHD issues.
