Why You Need a Change of Mindset Once In a While
There was a moment in my life that I need to do things differently, change some habits and eventually change my mindset.
The first time — when you change things — it feels weird to set to your new habits, but you will get to used to it. Change my mindset is changing the way I do things, changing the way I think about a certain subject (you heard different opinions), change your habits and thus your mind about how you do things in your life, because it didn’t work.
This is called a change of mindset. You change the way you think, the way you do things and the way you look into the world. Mostly because you have seen people behaving differently than you do, you watch the news item where the Amazon area is in a fire, people have been hurting you, and in some cases, you have all sorts of negative events happening in your life. You learn from it. Most of us do. I do. That is what life is meant for. To learn from the mistakes you make.
When there are too many negative events happening in your life, you do things in a certain way or you create habits in a way you won’t think about what happened. That negative emotion you will put that in your drawer in your head. And in certain situations, it’ll come out suddenly. This could happen very often. When you don’t realize it.
Sometimes you realize that you do things in life, but eventually, it doesn’t work out for you. You need the change. You need to change. Your habits need to change. You as a person need to change. That is all up to you. It is up to you if you are willing to change.
At least, that’s what I wanted in the last two years. I needed it. I need it now. But I also need it in the future. It is weird when you realize it when you realize you need the change. Things weren’t working for me anymore.
I had to wake up earlier to be more productive. I wanted a change for that. I stood up at 7.30 am. It was too late to wake up. I had to bring my daughters to school, I wanted to write, I wanted to a lot more. I didn’t feel that I had a lot of time to finish things. So, I set my alarm at 6 am last summer. It was three weeks before the summer break of my kids. But it didn’t work out. I still knew it would work out for me with the right discipline, somehow. It didn’t work out at that time. I wasn’t ready for it. That is what I believe. Others say I hadn’t the discipline I needed.
Then it happened! On the first day of the summer holidays, I woke up at 6 am. There were a lot of people talking outside my house, in my street. I couldn’t sleep anymore. So, fifteen minutes later I stood next to my bed, all dressed in my clothes. I didn’t know what to do.
So, I decided to write here on Medium more often. In the first place, it didn’t go as well as I thought. I planned to write three stories per day. But I couldn’t do that, because I am a slow writer.
Speaking of being writing. I wanted to be a writer, writing stories, short stories, ling stories, but also books. I made a whole plan to chase my writing career. I am not far yet, but there is some progress. I started my Patreon page, I am here on Medium and I have my Substack account. I even wrote my storyline in my notebook and I have made a list with character profiles. Yes, the progress is there, but I am not yet where I want to be: the finished book.
I am busy being involved — or I made doing it all myself — to do different projects at the same time. That also makes me a little bit overwhelmed.
Even in my writing style, I needed some change. I am still finding my writing voice. But I am changing somehow. I have to do small steps at once. Doing big steps is not really good for me. I will be overwhelmed. Then I will make mistakes or — even worse — I will throw the towel in the ring. It will be over then.
For me, it will be a big step when I finished a story or wrote something for my book.
All of these things made me change my mindset. How I do things and how I think about certain subjects.
Why you need a change
Once in a while, you need a change. You need to look different to a certain subject. When you first liked Trump as a president, now you could hate him. You have seen him failing in his promises. As a kid, you were a fan of the Yankees, but now they play terrible. You don’t like them anymore. They failed in your eyes. These are small changes you recognize immediately. But there are also habits you do and you don’t like you do. You don’t know how to change it. You ask for help with a therapist. You know you need that change in your habits.
Also, you need a change of mindset, because you have to learn other perspectives on subjects, on your habits, on other people’s behavior. This makes you also richer in the way you look into the world. You can learn from other people too when you let in other peoples’ perspectives.
You can become more passionate too. Especially when you meet people you click with but have another idea about a book, life or anything that comes up to you. That makes us rich in life. I love that.
Another reason why we need to have a change of mindset is getting more empathy. You get more empathy because you learn to see and hear others saying different things, doing different things and have another opinion than you. Which is making us thus richer in life.
Just have a change of mindset once in a while. Not every day, because you’re being overwhelmed by all the changes in your life. Not only will you be overwhelmed, but also people you live with and share your life with. They don’t know what to do the next time they see or speak to you. They will be confused about how to react to you.
How does change look like
In the first place, you have to realize that you need to change. When you don’t realize that you need a change, you can’t change anything. But how do you realize it?
That is very difficult to realize when you don’t mind what you’re doing or don’t pay any attention to how you do things. Like typing a lot of mistakes in your articles. The same errors you don’t know that you did it wrong every time. Or when you have created a habit your not satisfied with, but you don’t realize which one that is.
Like waking up every morning at 7 am while you actually want to do more things when you wake up one hour earlier. Also when you’re doing your hobbies, then you have to pay attention to it. How do I play that part of music while I can play it the other way as well?
Example: as a teenager, I got violin lessons from a well-know violin teacher at the conservatoire in Zwolle. This teacher told me I hold my bow not the right way. I never knew about that. I had to change that manner. But that change is in my head, I had to teach myself this new habit. It was a small habit to learn to play the violin much better.
Second of all, you have to be willing to changing a few things. If you’re not willing to change a habit you need to change, then there is a chance that you will stay stuck where you are and that you won’t get further in what you’re doing. You have to see the progress. Other people need to see that progress as well. But you are the person who needs to willing to change.
