Why Men Watch More Porn Than Women
Porn is a man’s thing. What exactly is the reason for that?
According to Psychology Today, 32% of Porn Hub’s audience is female. The source is google analytics data.
Another study provides more precise data:
When asked how often they watch porn, across commitment levels women answered “never” about twice as often as men.
- Among casually dating women, 57% said they never watch porn while only 25% of casually dating men stated the same.
- In committed relationships it is very similar. 60% of women and 25% of men said they never watch porn.
- Among engaged people, 68% of women and 38% of men never watch porn, according to the study.
- This situation is evident among married people: 65% of women and 37% of men never watch porn.
Honestly, I would have guessed the difference between man and women would be more significant.
Nevertheless, you can still see that men watch significantly more porn than women.
The reasons for this will be revealed in this article.
1. Porn Involves Numerous, Casual Partners
Generally speaking, men have a greater desire for a variety of sexual partners and are therefore more interested in casual sex. And porn conveys exactly this fantasy.
A study has clearly shown how many more men are interested in casual sex than men. Members of a researcher team asked people of the opposite sex about casual sex, among other things. While a whopping 75% of men accepted the offer, not a single woman agreed.

2. No Emotions Involved In Porn
Considering the purely biological goal of reproduction, which is embedded in our genes, it makes evolutionary sense for men to have a preference for a variety of sex partners, as this maximizes the chances of reproduction. This is probably why this preference has evolved.
Women, however, have to invest much more in offspring. They can also have far fewer children than men. Therefore, choosiness has evolved in women, so that they choose the partner with the best genes.
I think it’s fascinating how these evolutionary mating strategies are reflected in men’s preferences for porn and women’s preferences for romance novels.
Women tend to prefer romance novels over porn, as they are more in line with their evolved mating strategy and therefore appeal to them more.
They are, as already stated, generally much choosier than men and attach more importance to an emotional connection, which is usually completely missing in porn. Steve Stewart-Williams describes the preference of many women for romance novels in his book “The Ape That Understood The Universe” as follows:
Romance novels serve up a fantasy world very different than the world of pornotopia. They usually involve sex, but they focus a lot more on mate selection and on building an emotional bond. In a typical romance novel, woman meets man; man is a bit of a jerk; woman reluctantly finds herself attracted to man; woman eventually tames man and the couple live happily ever after.
“Beauty and the beast” and “ Fifty shades of grey” are examples that immediately come to my mind and confirm this exact pattern.
3. Porn Is Usually Male-Oriented
Also, it can be said that most porn is designed for men, as it often focuses on the woman’s body and the plot is limited to the sheer satisfaction of lust.
However, whether this is a reason for or a result of the fact that men watch more porn is probably difficult to answer.
