Why Is It So Hard To Be Honest, Or Is It Just Me?

“If the doors of perception were cleansed everything would appear to man as it is, infinite.” William Blake

Maybe it’s easier for some people, but I struggle at being real with myself.

That is why my life feels so shallow and hollow, I’m skimming along the top, afraid to dive into life.

I want to do a lot with my time on earth. It’s time to get serious.

We lie or mislead ourselves every day.

We find excuses and explanations so we don’t have to do things when we know we should.

At least I do.

I noticed a while ago that if I don’t want to do something I can find millions of reasons not to.

When I do want something I will do whatever it takes to get it.

This tells me is I can push myself and work hard; when I want to.

So the question is how do we stop deceiving ourselves and be real?

Its starts with self-reflection.

I am always fascinated by other people. Not so much who they are or what they do, but why they do it.

Some people use religion or dogma to guide their actions. Political leanings and thousands of other factors help us build our view of the world.

That is fine, I’m not trying to change anyone’s mind, I’m just offering another solution.

Instead of looking to someone or something else for the truth, look at ourselves.

What is the real motivation for our actions? Why do we do the things we do?

I’m not saying I, or anyone for that matter, have all the answers.

There is plenty to learn from others and I am a huge advocate of self-education.

But when we allow others to think for us and accept it as fact, we are giving away control of our lives.

I am on a journey of self-discovery for a couple of reasons.

One is because the more I understand myself and life in general the more well-rounded of a person I’ll be.

The other reason is I want to help people, in order to help others I need to help myself first.

Who am I to give advice when my life is a mess?

That is why I need to dig deep, if I continue to float along I will never go anywhere and never help anyone.

If we are being honest with ourselves we know what we need to do.

Having the honesty to be real with yourself is hard. Hopefully, I can help make it easier.
