Why Are Some Writers On Here So Entitled?

Stop acting like a spoiled child, no-one owes you anything.

It is a wonderful place on here. There are stories packed with interesting insights, great advice and entertaining anecdotes.

But there is a seedy underbelly of entitled writers that risk doing real damage to the supportive tone and forgetting the true purpose of this platform.

Here are a few home truths that we should all remind ourselves of from time to time.

They probably know more about business than you do

This is someone else’s commercial venture and let’s face it, unless you are a multi-millionaire and a household name, then I’m guessing that they know a little more about business than you do.

At this point in my career, Evan Williams has far more experience in building a successful online platform than I do. I don’t think he is going to be too worried about taking advice from me just yet. Sure, I have some ideas about how I would develop the platform if it was mine, but I would be naïve to think that they haven’t been considered already.

Truth is, if I tried to reach out to him, my voice would be drowned out by the thousands of others who think they know better too.

I’ll let you into a little secret. We don’t.

This platform does not belong to you

Given that it is their business model, then they are entitled to do what they want with it. If they decide that payment will be in candy from next week, then that is their prerogative.

Being angry that the algorithm doesn’t work quite how you would like it to is pointless. Your confusion about which articles get distributed is irrelevant. Your frustration that more readers don’t see your work is not their problem.

If you think you can do better, create your own platform. If not, just smile and be grateful that someone has provided this ready-made audience for us. It is a gift and it is our responsibility to make the most of it.

You are not their employee

When you are an employee, it comes with perks and guarantees. If you do the work that you have been employed for, you get your monthly salary. If you get sick you might be entitled to some sick pay. But you also have to jump to their command and work to their rules.

Writing on an online platform is different. Okay, there are a few rules, but on the whole, you can write what you want and when you want. You don’t have a boss making demands and if you feel like a day off you can take that whenever you choose.

Oh, and let’s not forget that those publication editors are often working for free too. They owe you nothing either.

If you want a regular job with all the certainty that this offers, go out and get one.

You really can’t have it both ways.

Maybe you aren’t that good at writing

Being on here has taught me a valuable lesson. I used to think that I was a pretty good writer. Then I came on here and I realised that I wasn’t good enough. Writing is about more than stringing mediocre sentence together. It is about knowing what the audience wants and then striking a chord with that audience.

I believe that I am a far better writer these days, but my prediction is that, in a few months’ time, I will look back on my writing now and realise that I still had a lot of growing to do. In fact, it will probably always be that way. As a writer, I hope that I will continue to grow and refine my skills. Tomorrow, I intend to be better than today.

So maybe the reason that we aren’t making more money is because we need to improve.

If your articles aren’t going viral and you aren’t able to quit your job just yet, stop throwing a tantrum and just focus on refining your skills. One day it might just happen for you and, if not, at least your writing will be far better as a result of your efforts.

Either way you’re a winner.

Life is just unpredictable at times

When you are dealing with the general public, you can never be certain what is going to be a hit and what isn’t. The world works in mysterious ways and there is usually no way to predict which stories will go down well and which will flop and fizzle out. Much of the time it is just down to luck — you might write about the right topic, in the right tone on the right day.

The same goes for any type of art. Think about all of the musicians, performers and artists that were underappreciated in their day, only to be discovered much later. Their work didn’t change, it is just that the planets aligned in a way that meant that the conditions were suddenly right for their work to be appreciated.

Life would be so boring if it was predictable. Embrace the uncertainty and enjoy your entry into the lottery. The mystery is part of the journey.

It feels far better to be grateful

This platform is an amazing place. In just a couple of months writing on here I have made (virtual) friends, I have improved my writing, I have read some brilliant advice and I have made a small profit along the way.

Remember that other people’s accomplishments do not negatively impact on you. When others do well, it doesn’t diminish your own chances of success.

When I see stories on here of people who are making thousands each month, I am happy for those individuals and. I look to see what lessons I can learn from them. I also take some of these tales with a little pinch of salt. I am pretty certain that some are a stretch of the truth — a symptom of the ‘fake it ’til you make it’ culture.

I’ve found the community on here to be a refreshingly supportive group of people. Despite the moaners, I promise to stay focused on all the good things that this platform offers. I hope the majority will do the same.

Please stop acting like spoiled children and focus on writing high quality articles that add value to others.

Let’s not ruin it by being entitled.
