Why are People Reading This Essay?

If You Figure It Out, Please Let Me Know.

Last December, I published an essay about what happened when a religious man refused to sit next to a woman on an airplane.

Although most of my work isn’t curated, this one was. In fact, it was curated in three categories, TRANSPORTATION, WOMEN and EQUALITY.

Despite the triple curation, almost nobody read it. It received just 38 Views the first day it went up, and 11 views the next day. After which it sank without a trace and vanished from my Medium Partner Program earnings.

Suddenly, out of the blue, it’s back again! On May 14th, It’s an Airplane, Not a Shul got 24 views. On the 15th? 36. After that it jumped to 75 views, then 86.

Yesterday 95 people read it.

Who are all these readers? Where are they coming from?

Somebody must have featured it or recommended it somewhere. Maybe one of my diehard fans rented a plane and flew over a major metropolitan area skywriting about it. Maybe Ev Williams praised it at a cocktail party.

I’d love to know why readers are suddenly flocking to this particular essay after a 4 month hiatus. If I understood that, maybe I could make them flock to more of my work.

At the very least, I could thank whoever is responsible.

I’ve even resorted to begging anyone who posts a comment about the piece to tell me how they came to read the thing.

So far? Crickets.

I’m not complaining. I’m thrilled! I’m grateful. But I’m also confused. This isn’t the best thing I’ve ever written. It’s not even in the top ten best things I’ve ever written.

Why this essay? Why now?

Like so much of what happens on this platform, that will probably remain a mystery.

And that’s okay. I’m just glad that my work is being read. (Still, if you have any theories about why this one suddenly took off? Let me know.)
