Who needs 100 Followers by Tomorrow?!? No Need to Worry if Medium Drops You from Getting Paid on New Year’s Eve

I will help you: 5 genuine ways to get followers

Photo by Nicolas Cool on Unsplash

A ha ha happy new year and a BIG Thanks to those who helped me. Now it’s time to give a lending hand to writers in need.

I know a lot of you new writers are freaking the hell out. Medium will drop you from getting paid if you don’t have 100 followers by New Year’s eve. That’s tomorrow!

No worries, I will help you because I’ve been EXACTLY in your shoes. I just made my 100 follower quota 2 days ago after I wrote this article:

Thanks again everyone!

Finding genuine followers through ‘Your Truth’

Maybe writing about your feelings will work for you because it did for me. I wrote a story that resonated with 41 people who followed me because I wrote my truth. I also didn’t follow everyone who followed me because I didn’t get around to reading their work yet. I will follow you IF I love your work but I’ll get into that later.

Finding genuine followers through comments

If it wasn’t for Justiss Goode commenting on one of my stories I wouldn’t have met her; or had this idea to write this in the first place.

  • So it’s good to leave comments to network and it gives you ideas for stories…Just like this one. Thanks Justiss:)
  • In many cases, people followed me because I left an insightful comment on a topic I cared about.

Use the hashtags in Medium’s search bar

When I was freaking out about not having enough followers, I did some research and discovered a lot of amazing writers by mistake.

  • I used the hashtags in medium’s search bar of topics that interested me And found people I wanted to follow too.

Those tips are great even for people who already have a huge following. Reading other writers is a good way to improve your own writing as well.

So write quality work

No matter how good you are, you can always improve. I know my writing needs to improve🤣

Disclaimer

I will follow you IF I love your work, let me explain.

In the story of me freaking out over having 74 followers, I wrote :

I follow people because I love their honest writing and hope they follow me because they love mine

I did follow people back who ‘commented’ in that story because I genuinely loved their work. I will follow you if I love your work too. When it comes to followers. It’s all about quality over quantity as a general rule of thumb.

I don’t believe in ‘follow for follow’ because it’s not a genuine follow it’s a numbers game. And alas, medium is playing numbers with newbie writers which sucks. So if you want to fast-track 100 followers by the Dec 31st deadline, this is the less shady approach.

How to fast track your following genuinely

I also got this brilliant idea after I read this genius piece by Justiss Goode:

In that story, this is what Justiss wrote and what I also propose:

What I Propose is:

Any member with LESS than 100 followers leave a “Comment” containing your username and the words “follow quota”

Any member leaving a comment and request to be followed MUST select 10 members from the comments to follow.

This is on the honor system, so any member who doesn’t honor the 10 follow requirement will receive BAD KARMA (I’m not wishing it on you, that’s just how life works :-)

So I’m going to keep the fire burning and copy the process. If you have less than 100 followers. Please leave a comment containing your username and the words “follow quota.” Select people from the comments to follow.

Here’s another tip, comment on Justiss’s story and she’ll follow if she likes your story too. It’ll be a double whammy for you if we both follow you.

Only follow people whose writing you enjoy. I don’t even know if this story is gonna get any views at all because there doesn’t seem to be any rhyme or reason why someone reads my stories. So If you can’t find someone in the comments you like(or they're no comments at all🤣) try genuine techniques to find followers. Here’s a recap:

  • Finding genuine followers through ‘Your Truth’
  • Finding genuine followers through comments
  • Use the hashtags in Medium’s search bar
  • Write quality work
  • Only follow people whose writing you enjoy

Final thoughts

Look, don’t stress about not getting enough followers by tomorrow. If you didn’t make the ‘100 follower’ quota, remember that writing is not a rat race. It’s not about the money or the following; It’s about the passion for writing. It’s the medium by which we enjoy creating our pieces.

If you love writing, you WILL write and people are going to feel your sincerity and WILL follow you…eventually.

If not 100 followers today (if you love writing) you’ll have 100 followers tomorrow or next year. Cheers to THAT!

Ha Ha Happy New Year!

Here’s my late Christmas gift to you🎁: If I love your work, I will also clap or respond to stories I think are good but got no views yet.

More from me

I’m sorry I didn’t think of writing this piece sooner….helping new writers the day before the Dec 31st deadline sucks. If you know my writing, you know that procrastination is my biggest weakness. So Stopping procrastination is a new year’s resolution I should have added to this list:)
