It tends to be superficial, short-lived, and never-ending.</p><p id="8489">Suffering for many people comes from trying to satisfy the outside world’s desires and resisting our own deeper, spiritual desires.</p><p id="9a64">The <b><i>Inner You</i> </b>believes that happiness is achieved through various techniques of spiritual awakening, including following spiritual and religious teachers and teachings. This is a step in the right direction but still contains emotional struggles through <a href="https://readmedium.com/surviving-and-thriving-a-dark-night-of-the-soul-b131f6ddfca?sk=7c2345acfa2284376df1a9373938e766"><i>Dark Night of the Soul</i></a> experiences.</p><p id="97ae">From the perspective of our <b><i>Spiritual You</i></b>, we are here in this incarnation to be our Soul in physical reality. “Negative experiences” happen when our <a href="https://readmedium.com/the-outer-ego-the-inner-ego-ef12d6ad1501?sk=1dd757d1f236b83d04e58768ced07eb2">Outer Self and our Spiritual Self</a> are out of alignment. When they are in alignment, we enter an abiding happiness that is maintained through all physical and emotional experiences.</p><p id="3662">Aligning with the <b><i>Collective Spiritual You</i></b> and the <b><i>God/Source You</i></b> will bring even higher levels of happiness, bliss, oneness, and the ability to <i>Create One’s Own Reality</i>. The Reason Why “You” Is the Most Toxic Word in New Age Spirituality

Fundamentals of the 5 spiritual “yous” that are always getting mixed up.

A Huge Debate Over “You”

“Man carries the seed of his misery or bliss, hell or heaven, within himself. Whatsoever happens to you, it happens because of you. Outside causes are secondary; inside causes are primary. And unless you understand this, there is no possibility of a transformation.”

This is a quote from Osho (1931–1990), a controversial spiritual teacher formerly known as Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh. It was posted as a meme on a spiritual awakening group on Facebook on June 3, 2021.

In about 2 days it generated a debate with 522 comments. Those comments fell into three categories:

Those who rejected the quote felt it was Spiritual Gaslighting innocent victims of crime and abuse. It was using spirituality to blame the victims.
A middle ground saw the quote as a way of saying that you cannot control what the outside world does to you, You Only Control How You Respond to what happens to you.
Those who fully supported the statement felt it was a true reflection of the New Age idea that “You Create Your Own Reality”. This includes everything — you are fully responsible for all that you encounter in your universe.

I can see the logic in all three of these arguments. As I see it, the main source of contention among these perspectives is the definition of “you”.

Not clearly defining what “you” means may be the main source of most spiritual debates. It is one that I am sure I have also transgressed many times.

Defining “You”

Even in non-spiritual terms, “you” can be confusing. Dictionary.com has 7 definitions of “you”. However, none of these is especially “spiritual”, except maybe #7, which is:

the nature or character of the person addressed: “Try to discover the hidden you.”

5 Spiritual “Yous”

I have been collecting spiritual terms for “Self” and “God” for the past few months. The Osho debate made me realize that all of the terms I had collected were different ways of saying “you”.

I group these different forms of “you” into 5 types (shown here with some examples; the full list of terms is below):

Type 1: The “OUTER YOU” — Ego, Lower Self, Small “i”, Your Personality, Physical Body, 3rd Dimension (3D) Self

Type 2: The “INNER YOU” — Awakened Self, Genuine Self, Individual Soul, Inner Self, Superego (Freud), True Self, Emotional Body, 4th Dimension (4D) Self

Type 3: The “SPIRITUAL YOU” — Big “I”, Christ Consciousness, Cosmic Consciousness, Future Self, Higher Self, Your Truth, Energy Body, Astral Body, 5th Dimension (5D) Self

Type 4: The “SPIRITUAL COLLECTIVE YOU”— Atman, Consciousness, Cosmic Soul, Godhead, Oversoul, Spirit, Unity Consciousness, Universal Mind, Universal Soul, Causal Body, 6th+ Dimension (6D+) Self

Type 5: The “GOD/SOURCE YOU”— All-That-Is, Brahman, Emptiness, God, Source, Tao, The Absolute, The Creator, The One, The Void (beyond dimensions), God Consciousness, The Quantum Field

Note that other indications of yourself would work in place of “YOU”, including “I”, “ME”, and “SELF”. The same definitions would apply.

Getting the Right “You”

Based on this understanding, the three perspectives on the Osho quote make sense:

Spiritual Gaslighting — assumes “you” are your physical body and ego, with limited ability to control much of anything (Type 1 — Outer You).
You Only Control How You Respond — assumes “you” are your awakened, inner self, with deep understanding and control over your emotions (Type 2— Inner You).
You Create Your Own Reality — assumes “you” are are a highly evolved spiritual being able to consciously change your physical and nonphysical universe (Type 3 — Spiritual You and Type 4 — Spiritual Collective You).

Note that the Type 5 — God/Source You is the source of all the other “yous”, and is entirely beyond all those other “yous” at the same time. That is why I did not include it above. Others, however, might define this type differently.

Revising The Debate

To be more clear, the quote that I started this article off with could have been:

“Man carries the seed of his misery or bliss, hell or heaven, within himself. Whatsoever happens to the Outer You, it happens because of the Inner You (emotionally) and Spiritual You (reality). What your Outer You sees as Outside causes are secondary; what your Inner and Spiritual You know as inside causes are primary. And unless you understand this, there is no possibility of a transformation of your Outer You.”

I admit that this is a bit convoluted, but I think it is also more clear. It is saying that: — the Outer You has the physical experience; — the Inner You has and interprets the emotional experience; and — the Spiritual You is the one creating your reality with a specific purpose in mind.

Every “You” Wants Happiness

Everyone wants to be happy. Happiness, however, is different for the different “yous”.

The Outer You believes in the happiness that is defined by your dominant culture and society. That happiness is based on owning certain things and getting the approval of certain others. It tends to be superficial, short-lived, and never-ending.

Suffering for many people comes from trying to satisfy the outside world’s desires and resisting our own deeper, spiritual desires.

The Inner You believes that happiness is achieved through various techniques of spiritual awakening, including following spiritual and religious teachers and teachings. This is a step in the right direction but still contains emotional struggles through Dark Night of the Soul experiences.

From the perspective of our Spiritual You, we are here in this incarnation to be our Soul in physical reality. “Negative experiences” happen when our Outer Self and our Spiritual Self are out of alignment. When they are in alignment, we enter an abiding happiness that is maintained through all physical and emotional experiences.

Aligning with the Collective Spiritual You and the God/Source You will bring even higher levels of happiness, bliss, oneness, and the ability to Create One’s Own Reality. Those levels require considerable spiritual work to reach — for most of at least. But they offer the broadest perspective on reality, and the deepest knowing of the oneness of all your “yous”. In that way, they are the highest forms of happiness that we can aspire to.
