When Does the Fun Actually Start?

Talking about having fun is not the same as experiencing it.

You can’t enjoy a game until you start playing it.

So if you are seeking to detect fun in an activity, you better start doing it. You can’t find out if you’ll enjoy a book until you actually read it. You can’t have fun in a self-motivational game until you jot down your ideas and test them out.

And here is another thing:

Talking about having fun is not the same as having it. And thinking that something should be fun is not the same as experiencing it.

Only by playing a game will you determine whether it is fun for you at this moment or not.

There is a difference between thinking something would be fun, either because others do it or because it used to be fun, and actually experiencing it and being fully engaged in an activity in the current moment.

“Fun is another word for learning.”

“‘Fun is the emotional response to learning.’ — Chris Crawford, March 2004. Also, Biederman and Vessel’s research shows that curiosity itself is inherently pleasurable.”

— Raph Koster, Theory of Fun for Game Design

I agree here with Raph Koster; fun is about learning and curiosity.

And learning and curiosity can’t occur before or after the moment, but only in the moment of now.

How does fun feel for you?

Even if it is hard to describe what fun is and how it feels, I would like to ask you to give it a try, and contemplate what fun means to you, and which activities you remember experiencing as fun and in which circumstances.

Which of them was the most recent one?

I invite you to share them in the comments.
