OUR MEDIUM NEIGHBORHOOD

When a Bug Decides to Kick My Ass

I read, clap, and comment on Medium stories

I enjoy the written words shared by my neighbors on Medium. Image by Mystic Art Design from Pixabay

For the past couple of days, a bug decided it was time to bite me in the ass. Naturally, it’s the last weekend to use a lens I rented.

Making matters worse is my daughter is suffering from a bout of bronchitis. It sneaks up on her at least twice a year. This time it’s really awful. As sick as I am, I know she’s hurting twice as much. She thought it was easing up Friday, but nope. Not happening. I’d gladly take it from her if I could.

My weekend has thus evolved around sleeping and coughing until it hurts. That’s an interesting feeling when you wake up and cough for the first time. Holy crap, that’s painful!

When I’m not sleeping or hacking up a lung, I’m at my laptop, checking out stories on Medium. And I realize just how many un-fucking-believably talented writers call this platform home. I’m sure some are double-dipping by writing on other sites, but I’m damned happy they’re still sharing their stories here.

A quick and less-than-professionally conducted search on Google says there are about 200,000 members on Medium. That number may fluctuate, but I have trouble counting past ten, so you’re stuck with about 200K.

I do a lot of my reading early in the morning or late at night. That’s the beauty of being a Boomer. Like us or not, we’re making money just crawling out of bed. And as I’ve said in a previous post, there are a lot of us.

I understand part of the game on Medium is reading, clapping, and commenting, assuming you think a post is worthy. Do I comment on all of them? Nope. But I’ll damn sure scroll down to the end first, go back, and read the post in full. Then I’ll clap and hang out for a couple of minutes to increase the read time.

I think many of us do that, but let’s hope I don’t get booted for admitting it. Medium is a glorious community filled with laughter and tears. Our neighbors share their greatest fears and triumphs, and holy shit, a helluva lot of damn fine photographs. I consider myself a decent photographer, but the photos I’ve seen in Weeds & Wildflowers, SNAPSHOTS, Full Frame, In for a Penny, and Bouncin’ and Behavin’ Blogs are outstanding, and I’m always in awe of the photos and written words I see in those pubs.

That’s not to say other publications aren’t just as fantastic. But the pubs I mentioned were either kind enough or foolish enough to open the door and let me in. Hopefully, it’s the former and not the latter.

For the record, this is my 97th post on Medium. A couple of months ago, I decided I needed to treat Medium as a job. I love writing and sharing my stories with folks who stop by to read, clap and comment. The extra money for laundry doesn’t hurt, either.

To all the writers whose work I’ve read, thank you for sharing your stories.

If you’ve read this far, thank you for stopping by. Lay 50 claps on me and comment if you would please. I will return the favor. Cheers!

I accept tips, which go directly to Dining for Hunger, a recognized 501(c)(3) organization that looks to end food insecurity. If you can spare a dollar or two, I’d be grateful.
