What You Imagine, You Become

And then there is you — sleepwalking as if under a spell, instigating this lovemaking, grinding me hard, forcefully — as the scent of cracked coriander fills the air.
Writing from an object’s Point Of View can be quite difficult. It takes a lot of imagination and an ability to step out of the box. The above quote is from a story I wrote sometime ago… the narrator is a pestle. Yep. You know, those phallic shaped tools used for crushing substances such as spices or drugs, in a mortar. You can read it here: A day in the Life of a 1680 Pestle.
In the pestle’s story the object is very much involved in the action. The sexy action hero if you like. But you can also write from the perspective of what the item sees, as Marie A. Rebelle has done here in her story, Shattered Glass:
Just as her form walks through the archway, the man appears behind her. He grabs her arm, swings her around into his arms, and kisses her, his fingers entangled in her hair…
Another way to tackle this challenge would be to write in the third person:
“Hey ladies,” Dahlia greets them cheerfully as she’s pressed into the mix. “Looking good Rose, your petals are so rich and velvety today. The bride will be very happy with you. And Tulip, a pleasure as always. I’m loving your ensemble…
In the above tale, Blathering Blooms — Tale of a Wedding Bouquet, Mrs. K tells the story of a bunch of flowers. Each one is given a voice, as they are added to the wedding bouquet.
I hope you are getting an idea now of how to approach this theme. It is so much fun and an excellent writing task to broaden your skills.
When writing this kind of story the most important thing is you become the item. Step in to those shoes. Picture the pearls. Become a brassiere. See through the eyes of the doll! Look through those sunglasses. Be that suitcase, a dagger, the candle or the match. (J. Sharland Day).
View it as a privilege to give life to an inanimate object. Just think how grateful it would be.
