What Makes Me Follow You On Medium

My perspective on how I choose who to follow

I suppose everyone has a slightly different selection process. Sometimes, I receive a notification that someone has followed me, and I try to guess why that person would want to follow me.

I cannot accurately know the reasons except that I suspect that person must have found my writing interesting in some aspects.

Let me share my opinion on how I choose writers to follow and see if it is familiar to you. I think I chose them based on the following points:

1. Authenticity

This word means to me simply that the person shares from their heart and thinks in a way that I can relate to. The dictionary says that being authentic means being of undisputed origin and not a copy.

Hence, if you write with your heart and share about your life without any form of manipulation, I will find you authentic and decide whether to read more of your future articles.

I know sharing things happening in a person’s life is not easy. It takes a lot of courage to share our viewpoints. There is also a certain level of trade-off in our privacy, depending on how much we wish to share.

Some people had less difficulty, while others were more apprehensive about sharing their personal life. As long as I can sense your sincerity in sharing, I will qualify you as an authentic writer worth following.

2. Tactful and polite words in your writings

I have a low tolerance when I read vulgarities in your writings. I am sure you can use polite and not-so-trashy words. I like your essays to respect others’ viewpoints and not be written in strong and condemning language.

Sometimes, I sense a lot of anger in the writer’s comments, and of course, I would not wish to follow them.

Hopefully, your writing will not be overly technical, which I cannot relate to. I have difficulty following you if I cannot connect with your sharing.

3. Inspiring story or comments

Everyone hopes to be encouraged; there is no exception on Medium. I enjoy inspiring stories or narratives about what’s happening in your life. I will thank you as long as you share to the best of your comfort zone.

It is sometimes hard to describe what’s going on in your life. We all know there are limitations to what we can share in writing.

Even if we want to share the story of someone, we have to be aware if that person wants their story to be shared.

An inspiring essay is often a piece of writing that makes us think and reflect on our lives.

Final thoughts

I’m not particularly eager to follow someone just because they follow me. I will read through some samples of their writings to check if I can relate to what they share.

So do not take any offence that I did not follow back just because you are following me. I am not an excellent writer, but I am learning to share my thoughts as I write.

I hope to find more writers that I can relate with on Medium.
