Why Do Women Live Longer Than Men?
My understanding of this issue
Generally, in most countries, women live longer than men. As a man, I sometimes ponder why. The difference in life expectancy between women and men is a complex phenomenon influenced by various biological, behavioural, and social factors.
On average, I suppose women live a few years more than men because:
1. Biological Factors:
One of the primary reasons for the longevity gap is biological factors. Women have certain physiological advantages that contribute to their longer life expectancy.
For instance, women generally have lower rates of heart disease and other cardiovascular conditions than men. Hormonal and genetic factors may also play a role.
2. Behavioural Factors:
Lifestyle choices and behaviours significantly impact health and life expectancy. Men tend to take on riskier pursuits and may suffer more possibilities of dying in an accident.
Women may be slightly better at managing their stress. Hence they have the possibility of living longer.
3. Social Factors:
Social and cultural factors can also contribute to the longevity gap. Women seem to be better at social connections and emotional support. All these little characteristics may have contributed to them living a little longer.
Final thoughts
I believe anyone can live a little longer if they consciously take care of their emotional state, exercise and eat healthily.
It cannot be a generalisation across the board because we occasionally see men outliving women.
We should all ask the critical question: Why do you want to live so long? Is there something meaningful that you want to pursue in your life?
Living a long life may be everyone’s dream, but having a worthy goal is far more important than looking at how many years one can live.
