What I Learned After I Wrote 60 Articles On Medium?
How do I feel? Lessons. Motivation. Challenges. Future goals.
This is the 60th one, and I can’t be more than amazed by myself.
I don’t say this with a sense of negative pride or ego. I say this as a manifestation of this achievement.
I have never written so much in almost four months. When I started to write on Medium, I remember my first milestone was to write ten articles.
It was a huge number for me.
In the first instance, Medium overcame my expectations. Not in terms of what I can do here (that’s another story I will share lately) but in the context of what I am capable of.
I didn’t have the chance to share my life story in my last years.
You only know something about my gaming experience, some of my stats on Medium, and a little about my family. I am planning to write more about it.
Even the Internet never forgets.
I have been through a lot in the last few years. This is not that impressive. The fact I have learned a lot is remarkable.
My wife doesn’t have the same point of view.
She remembers those experiences with bad feelings. I know those were tough times for her. But as for me, I am grateful for those. As I said, I learned a lot. A part of me now exists only because of them.
What is the point of sharing this with you?
In the last few years, I have been trying to find ways to become more productive and disciplined, learn more, be more consistent in what I want to make, run after delayed gratification, not instant gratification, and understand that great things take time to happen.
If you go to the bottom of my published articles, you will notice a similar story at the start of my first article.
That’s how I felt those days. Thanks to Medium and the community here, significant changes happened. Writing 60 articles has helped me to see the good parts of me.
Writing 60 articles proves that I am capable of many things:
- I can write more than short sentences in my journal or messages on my phone;
- I can be consistent — 60 articles in three months and a half is not impressive. Thirty articles in the last six weeks are noteworthy for me. Maybe you are impressed I wrote 17 articles in 13 days, haha!
- I can be disciplined and manage my time — writing, family, work, and gaming require them;
- I can have my voice and be original — I have to admit that some of my paragraphs in the first articles have a few AI touches;
- I can learn and apply — I have considerable lessons from the other writers in terms of how Medium works and writing tips;
- I am more confident when I share my stories;
What I learned after I wrote 60 articles on Medium?
- You learn to write by writing;
- You become more confident with every article you write;
- Once you start to write more, you find ideas everywhere;
- Writing shouldn’t be separated from reading;
- Longer articles perform better in terms of read ratio;
- It is an extraordinary phenomenon when you write a new idea, even if you have another 30 in your notes;
- You learn when you write;
- Write about what you like, but also about what goes well;
- If money is your only motivation, you will probably quit — writing is not only about money;
- Simple is better;
- Efforts pay off — in terms of stats and improvement;
- Writing at the beginning of your day is a game changer;
- Grammarly can be annoying sometimes;
- Your article will never be perfect — in terms of structure, words, value given;
- A 450+ words articles are three 150+ words article — don’t be afraid of long content;
- Don’t write when you feel pressured by it.
Any challenges?
Write because you want, not because you must!
This thought is something I am still struggling with. Also, it is an idea for a future post. This is why I want to keep it short.
I wanted to reach that moment when I write every article because I want to. I don’t want to be driven by any monetary motivation, even though the potential money you can make on Medium was and still is a motivation for me.
I faced this by understanding that sometimes you have to make things because you must. I am confident that ‘must’ is the point that differentiates those who succeed from those who quit. This principle applies outside of the Medium platform as well.
So, it is ok if your writing motivation isn’t pure.
Future goals
As you know, I like to keep track of everything I do on Medium.
Even though 60 wasn’t a milestone, I chose to share some thoughts about it because I didn’t when I reached 50 published articles.
My next milestone is 100 published articles. I am curious about what new lessons I am going to learn.
Learning is a continuous process.
