Gamification and self-discipline

I’ve always sought the ideal formula for productivity and discipline: to-do lists upon to-do lists, challenges, punishments, plans, schedules, and more. Yet, most often, the initial days would be incredibly productive, only to be followed by a gradual decline in my commitment.

My struggle with productivity and discipline stems from the fact that, at times, a significant part of my energy and focus is directed towards the pleasure of gaming.

Even though I’m married and have two children, I find myself drawn into gaming when I should be focusing on personal development.

One day, amidst a more productive period, I made a decision. For the initiated, I’m a League of Legends enthusiast, where you either win or lose. In such a context, I thought, "Why not make something productive out of my gaming losses?" I decided that for every lost League of Legends match, I would commit to doing 50 push-ups and 50 sit-ups.

At first glance, it may not seem like much, but the "wow" moment arrived after a few consecutive losing streaks (I had in a few days), which resulted in a daunting challenge: 525 push-ups and 525 sit-ups. That evening, I made a pact with myself – no more gaming until I had completed this physical challenge.

The sense of accomplishment I felt the next day, after completing those push-ups and sit-ups, was nothing short of extraordinary.

Conclusion:

In my journey to find the perfect balance between leisure and productivity, I stumbled upon a unique solution that not only motivated me to stay disciplined but also transformed my gaming habits.

It’s a testament to the power of gamification and how channeling our weaknesses can lead to unexpected triumphs. It goes to show that with the right mindset and determination, even our leisure activities can become tools for self-improvement.

So, next time you find yourself at the crossroads of pleasure and productivity, consider how you can turn that diversion into an opportunity for growth.
