What I Learned After Earning $1,200+ and 60,000+ Views In 6 Months

It has been always a viral topic or niche (if we consider it) when people talk about their learnings and earnings on Medium.

Not only on Medium, but this topic is also very much popular on Youtube, you can almost find all YouTubers with over 100k subscribers making a video on their earnings.

Hence, I also thought to do the same. As I feel my journey can inspire somebody here and help him/her in one way or another. I feel it is better to write it on the internet rather than writing it down in a personal journal.

The Start of Cash Flow

It has been more than a year since I started writing on this platform. But in August 2021 I made my first three-digit earning which was $233. I wrote around 15 stories and there 2 specifically viral stories that helped me to earn more passively in the coming months.

From that month my earnings never dropped from triple-digit to double or single-digit.

Here are a few exceptional stories that gained over 4K views and have earned over $100.

Trial and Error works

After earning my first three-digit payment, I started understanding what kind of stories work in a short span of time. So I started my experimentation with my already published stories.

I started playing here and there with titles and thumbnails of my old flop articles that never crossed 500 views and have earned almost pennies.

And one two of my more stories got viral and again earned over $100 in the span of 10 days.

Number and Retention Time

I learned that if you mention numbers in the title it works really well and if your articles provide value then it is guaranteed that the article will cross above the $50 mark.

Because, if there is something to take back from your article for the readers the retention time/member reading time will be high for your article and hence your earnings will be high.

Author’s stats for example

The Decline in earnings, Playing a long term game

After earning over $250 for 3 months there has been a decline in my views and earnings over the past two months. Honestly, it went to $100-$120 a month.

This is because I have started to focus on writing more value-based articles and timeless pieces that can earn more in long term. Because if you notice you can find authors here on a medium who publish over 30 stories on month and earn over $1000 a month easily by writing mostly temporary articles.

But their plus point is the volume that helps them to earn more. In my case, I am a full-time engineer and I often get time to write more in a day, still, I manage to publish over 15 pieces a month which includes both tech-based and other articles.

I have published over three articles in big publications in which I have spent many days researching and writing. Those articles are not earning much but I expect them to earn more in the near future as they are timeless.

Finally, I am more focused on writing articles that stay long and provide value to the readers. In between, I will try to write these kinds of articles in which I will share my story and perspective that can help other writers also.
