What Does It Mean To Be?

Photo by Juan Rumimpunu on Unsplash

We have become so consumed with doing things in life and achieving things that we have forgotten how to live.

We are here on earth for a reason or else we wouldn’t be here. So then the question is, why are we here? Is the point of being here to accumulate as much as possible and do more and achieve everything, or is the point of life simpler than that?

It’s good to have goals and a direction for your life. But that won’t necessarily make us happy. The things we do have to have meaning or relevance for them to make us happy.

Doing things for awards or money doesn’t make us happy. Doing something that we care about and believe in does.

So if we are not obsessed with money and fame what do we do with our time? In a perfect world, we would all be free to do what we want whenever we choose.

However, in real life, this won’t work because someone has to work or the world will stop.

So how do we find meaning and happiness if we still have to work?

Money and possessions and titles and awards don’t create happiness. If we are doing something we love and care about and get those things they will make us happy. But it’s not the things themselves that cause the happiness, it’s what we do with our time every day that provides the meaning.

Innovation and technology have improved our lives, however, we have gotten to a point where all these shiny things are no longer helping us and are now enslaving us.

When we buy into the idea that we need more stuff, or the newest stuff, or better stuff, we forgot how to be.

If our happiness and self-worth are tied to how much money or followers we have, we will always be searching and hoping for something to come.

Being grateful for what we have allows us to enjoy it more. Being grateful for life allows us to enjoy it more.
