Abstract

The text presents a creative exploration of unconventional food pairings through a poetic lens, as part of the #PromptMe series. It delves into the culinary experimentation that pushes the boundaries of traditional flavor matching, such as the unexpected harmony of breakfast sausage with maple syrup. The poem, prompted by community suggestions, also introduces more daring combinations like squid legs with peanut butter, drawing a connection to a scene from the anime "Food Wars (Shokugeki no Soma)". The author, Lucy Dan, expresses gratitude for the community's engagement with the challenge and hints at future pieces for readers to explore.

Opinions

  • The author suggests that while chefs typically aim for the best food combinations, understanding the worst can lead to a deeper knowledge of flavor dynamics.
  • The combination of a chili sauce sandwich, although unusual, is likened to the familiar ketchup sandwich and is acknowledged as a favorite for some.
  • Brownies with lemon drops are presented as a plausible pairing, with the sourness of lemon contrasting the sweetness, a concept already embraced in various desserts.
  • The pairing of breakfast sausage and maple syrup is described as a serendipitous discovery, enhancing the savory flavor of the meat with the sweetness of syrup.
  • The most intriguing combination for the author is squid legs with peanut butter, which also references a scene from the anime "Food Wars (Shokugeki no Soma)".
  • Lucy Dan expresses a personal preference for the breakfast sausage and maple syrup combination and thanks the community for their participation in the #PromptMe challenge.

Weirdest Food Combinations

A prompted poem

most chefs strive for the best food combinations

but in experimenting with the worst you truly understand how flavours combine (and which truly don’t).

sandwich with chilli sauce seems right, seems close to a ketchup sandwich — odd in its own right but an all-time fave for a few.

brownies and lemon drops seem like a plausible combination with lemons sour, yes, but existent in many dessert recipes as a juxtaposition between the zesty lemon and the sweet.

breakfast sausage and maple syrup came out of absolute serendipity, a messy plate of pancakes and a poorly hand-eye coordinated me, realizing that the sweetness enhances the depth of the savoury meat sticks.

but the one I truly most want to try is surely squid legs with peanut butter.

Lucy Dan 蛋小姐 (she/her/她) wants to thank everyone who hopped on the #PromptMe challenge to submit prompts (bolded and italicized)! The breakfast sausage and maple syrup is a personal favourite. The squid tentacles with peanut butter is actually an allusion to the classic opening scene of a popular anime, Food Wars (Shokugeki no Soma).
