Weekly Investing: What Did I Buy?

My weekly purchases

Couple of weeks have passed since my last portfolio update.

If you are reading this for the first time, I am building a dividend portfolio with the main goal of generating income. Every single week I add a small amount to my portfolio with a minimum of $50.

I have also set other rules, to protect my portfolio from the market and from myself. You can read all the details below:

COVID-19 is changing the world and will continue to do so. Therefore, being prepared for a future similar event by pursuing a more resilient income seems a reasonable decision.

When it comes to investing for the long term, I am a supporter of the following quote by Ramit Sethi:

“The easiest way to manage your money is to take it one step at a time and not worry about being perfect.”

I am not looking to time the market here with this portfolio but I do apply to some degree technical analysis to help with my weekly decision process.

What Did I Buy This Week?

As I explained in the previous article, I have already built the basis of the portfolio and I do have the intention of holding the positions for the long term unless some of the rules are broken.

Therefore, this week I have increased 3 existing holdings: ABBV, GILD, and CCOI. These tickers represent AbbVie Inc., Gilead Sciences, Inc., and Cogent Communications Holdings, Inc., respectively.

In a market that is surely disconnected from many of the fundamental factors, it is hard to keep our heads above the water and look for opportunities.

ABBV is pulling back from the 52 weeks high and after quite a run, I consider the current price a good entry point. GILD has previous support at $65 and a downtrend is still in play. Gilead is also a long term play and I averaged down. CCOI has also historically great support around the $65 level. After a negative market response to Q2 earnings, seems the price is stabilizing now and I have averaged down on my position as well.

Portfolio exposure after the purchase is as follows:

  • ABBV: 2.26%
  • GILD: 3.25%
  • CCOI: 3.22%

When looking to the sector exposure, the Healthcare sector had a jump of +3% and Communication Services +2% with the purchases above:

The Growth

In a nutshell, this is the progression of this small Dividend Income Portfolio which currently sits at $4212:

Here are the dividends received so far on a monthly basis with a total of $53.17:

Thank you for reading and hope I demonstrated that small amounts can compound rapidly and generate income. Every little step is one step closer to the right destination.
