Summary

The web content discusses the unique, individual perspectives of life and existence, metaphorically represented by the diverse windows of the Desert View Watchtower in the Grand Canyon National Park, which offer distinct views of the landscape.

Abstract

The author, Alan Lew, draws a profound spiritual analogy between the Desert View Watchtower's varied windows and the myriad perspectives of sentient beings. Each window frames a unique view of the Grand Canyon, symbolizing the singular experiences and viewpoints of individuals. The tower, designed by Mary Colter, is celebrated for its ability to capture the essence of the Grand Canyon and Arizona through its architecture and Pueblo Indian decorations. The author emphasizes that, just as each window provides a different perspective, each person's life experience is a unique and unreplicated "work of art." This diversity in viewpoints is not only confined to humans but extends to all sentient beings, highlighting the beauty of a universe where each experience is perfect and true in its own right. The author encourages readers to embrace their individuality and the uniqueness of others, recognizing that all perspectives are part of the oneness of the universe.

I am fortunate to live close to the Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona. I have been there many times. My favorite place to visit in the park is the Desert View Watchtower at the East Entrance. I like the overall view from the tower of the Grand Canyon, the Colorado River, and Painted Desert.

But I especially love walking up the Tower.

Architect Mary Colter designed the Desert View Watchtower, which was completed in 1932. Her intent was a design that matched the natural and cultural geography of the region. (You can read the Tower’s history and see photos and a video on the National Park Service website.)

What always amazes me about the tower is how each window in it gives a unique view of the Grand Canyon and its surroundings. The top and bottom floors have large picture windows. But in between, the windows are of varied sizes and seem randomly scattered as they follow the staircase to the top floor.

As I walk up the stairs that circle the inner wall of the tower, I always feel like each window is an individual and separate painting, worthy as a work of art. Each gives a unique perspective and tells its own story.

Together, the building and the windows (along with the Pueblo Indian designs that decorate the walls) masterfully capture the spiritual essence of the Grand Canyon and Arizona.

The Desert View Watchtower

The Watchtower is a spiritual analogy of the experience of life. It is one thing, an infinite circle with many windows. — And each window is an eye to a unique witnessing of the world.

Open your eyes and look. Take in the entirety of your vision, your unique window on the world. — No one else has ever seen, nor will ever see, the same window that you see.

Like the Watchtower windows, Your view is an individual and separate painting of reality. — It is a unique work of art.

Each person’s view is a random framing of the infinite. It holds a special beauty that will never be replicated by another. — That is our purpose, to be special and unreplicated.

That is true for every sentient being in the universe. Each person, animal, insect, and plant experiences a unique view of reality. — And each is a work of art.

Each experience, each window, is perfect and true in its perspective. No matter how different and conflicting they may be. — There is only truth in the oneness of the Watchtower.

That is the wonder of our shared universe … and of you. Cherish your perfection and honor the uniqueness of others. — We are all aspects of the one Source, experiencing creation.

So expand your truth, Into the spacious awareness that surrounds you and is you. — Become Your Watchtower.
