Using Medium to Earn Exposure for Your Books

Tips and tricks to maximize this exciting platform

Hello everyone!

I launched ‘Write and Review’ about a month ago as a way to learn more about this publishing platform and to collect all my reviews in one place. One of the things I’ve discovered in my years in publishing is that it can be difficult to generate engagement on your articles. There have been many instances throughout the years when I’ve received payment for articles, but never any feedback from readers.

In a way, Medium combines some of the interactive features of Social Media platforms with blogging. Once you’ve put up a few articles, you can log into Medium in the morning and expect to see a dozen or so notifications about your work. The engagement is rewarding, and there is even the potential to earn a passive income from the work you’ve published on Medium. In this short newsletter, I’ll give you some pointers on how to leverage your visibility on Medium.

Reviews

Most of the people who are currently followers of this publication are people that I’ve contacted personally. My ambition with this page isn’t to exceed the growth rate of other Medium publications. Instead, I consider this page something of a work space where my writer friends can get together, support each other, and share recently discovered tricks.

Reviews are especially important to independent and small press authors. I encourage all of you to jot down a few words about all the books you’ve read, publish the reviews, and ask the authors to follow this page. It’s also important to clap for, comment on, and share the articles that are published. The more eyes that come to this publication, the better chance your review will be read.

If you have questions about submitting articles to this publication, please read this article.

Publications

The main thing I’ve discovered in the last month is that the key to Medium lies in contributing to the various publications. Publications are like massive newsletters, some of which have hundreds of thousands of subscribers. To submit to a publication, you have to request to be added as a writer. Some publications have forms to fill out right on the page, and with others you have to send an email request. When sending an email request, I find you get the best results when you send a draft link to a Medium article as an example of your writing.

In my experience, Medium publications are one of the best resources available anywhere on the internet for getting a lot of eyeballs on your work. Also, the kind of people who comment on your Medium articles are much more engaging than the individuals you might interact with in the comment section of a blog post.

I am currently listed as a writer for: The Writing Cooperative, P.S. I Love You, The Ascent, Curiosity Never Killed the Writer, Extra Newsfeed, Thoughts and Ideas, Illumination, A Parent is Born, and others. A good resource that allows you to peruse a wide variety of publications on Medium and see how many followers they have can be found here.

Note that some of these publications have very strict formatting requirements and your submission will get rejected if you don’t follow them. Part of my intention with ‘Write and Review’ is to help you with your formatting so you have a better chance of getting articles accepted into publications. I tend to follow the format of The Writing Cooperative since they have very strict guidelines. Pay special attention to title case and attributes for your photos.

My strategy is to submit to the publications with the most followers, and if they are rejected, I just continue to submit down the line.

Curation

Publications get you a lot of visibility, but you can also get visibility through curation. Every now and then after you publish an article, you get an email from Medium informing you that your article has been selected for wider distribution. Essentially this means that Medium will take on the duty of promoting your work for a short time.

You don’t have to submit an article to a publication to be eligible for curation, but it seems to help. The more visibility you can get for any article, the better. Here are three articles of mine that have been curated.
