Use Prioritization To Eliminate Procrastination

I realize that when I prioritize things in my life, that tiny action, along with love, leaves no space for procrastination

Tears flowed from Sudene’s eyes as she walked on the small stage in the conference room at her job. Sandra Goodman, one of her coworkers and the presenter, approached smiling. A gift basket packed with perfume, lotion, and makeup items from various companies in her right hand and an envelope in her left hand.

Easing towards the microphone, she said, “Today we want to celebrate and thank the most caring person in this company. A woman that made the people under her a priority. A woman with a colorless and non-judgemental heart. She will change your life and living for the better and she knows how to connect you with your inner self forcing you to see life as it is facing you. Among other things, she taught me the value of awareness. Plus. . . “

Before she could continue, Sudene said, “Thank you for your kindness, but I can’t accept this.”

“Why not?” a mixture of voices asked in the audience of twenty-five of her coworkers, staring at her, while Sandra eyed her with knotted brows of confusion.

Dabbing her teary eyes with the Kleenex someone handed her, she confessed, “I didn’t care because I care. I care because life took away every choice I had not to.”

“We don’t understand,” a familiar voice in the audience shouts.

“Ten years ago, I mastered the art of procrastination and allowed it to control my life. I prioritized nothing. The brake light for my car was warning me. For four months, I kept changing the date with my mechanic.” She paused as the memories tore inside her, spreading pain throughout her body, and the tears roamed free. “My brakes failed as someone hit me from behind while I waited for the red light to change, shoving my car and me into the path of oncoming traffic. I hit and crippled a sixteen-year-old child.”

A few of her coworkers gasp in shock. She said, “life punished me for my procrastinating, forcing me to stop at all cost.”

Lisa, Shelly, Claudette, and Paul walked on stage. Lisa took the microphone from her and said, “You kept all four of us under you not only focus on our jobs but also what is happening in our lives and around us. You encourage, motivate, and uplift with kindness. All of us went back to college and improved our lives because of you. You are not aware, but you have to use prioritization to help us to stop procrastinating.”

Shelly took the microphone, “You treated us how we wanted to be treated. Even with our flaws you didn’t judge or criticize.”

Paul took the microphone from Shelly, “You made a mistake and learned from it and went on to save four lives that we know about. You did what my parents couldn’t do. Get me to go back to school and stay out of trouble.”

It was Claudette’s turn. “Girl,” she said, swaying her head left to right. “we are here to celebrate a beautiful heart filled with love. The mistake that created change for you and bought you into our lives isn’t going to stop this celebration or our gratitude for what you have added to this establishment. You have taught us how to use prioritization to eliminate our acts of procrastination. You have changed your life and life has forgiven you. Life will always forgive the heart that change for the better. Now it’s time for you to forgive yourself.”

Someone in the audience stood up and said, “You taught me that life will help the ones who want to change for good. You must learn how to forgive yourself.”

The small audience screams over and over, “Forgive yourself! Forgive yourself!”

Smiling in happy tears, Sudene shared after hugging all four of her coworkers, “Thank you, everyone. I wanted to make a difference and make sure everyone I know uses the priority to make sure procrastination won’t wreck their lives, and the lives of others like it did mine.”

When I prioritize things in my life, that tiny action, along with love, leaves no space for procrastination, making my day and life better. Procrastination is a weapon that can and will destroy lives. Don’t let it ruin yours!
