In the 1960’s, the U.S. National Laboratories in Oak Ridge, TN developed not one, but TWO different nuclear reactors systems for energy production. One used Uranium as the radioactive fuel, the second used Thorium. But President Nixon could only fund future research in one system; he chose Uranium, from which we developed the Uranium Light Water Reactor we still use today. Thorium Molten Salt Reactors were put on the shelf.
Forty years later Kirk Sorensen, a NASA engineer, rediscovered the research data and reports still on the shelf at Oak Ridge. He has since carried the torch to promote this rediscovered energy source as the promise and the solution for the world’s future energy challenges. He believes, as now many others do, that Thorium MSRs will solve most of the challenges of higher energy demand and could even solve worldwide problems like poverty and water shortages. There are now over a dozen companies and half a dozen countries funding R & D in Thorium MSRs. The comparison table below, in large part, explains why Thorium is going to change the world.

Second, read the book Super Fuel, by Richard Martin, which tells the story of how the Thorium research was rediscovered and details many interesting facts about why Thorium is different and better than traditional reactors.
