POETRY / 30 DAY POETRY CHALLENGE

Unbroken Line

Prompt Day 14: Stepping out of the Stone Age

Ghostly human forms stepping out of the Stone Age cross time’s great expanse to gather at the nexus between the past and future

An unbroken line extends from Points A to Z via B through Y like a pulsing artery or a mighty motorway

Aeons like dust motes that scatter in the sunlight dance down corridors never able to detect their furious collision

In these three connected tanka poems, I have used the traditional structure of 31 syllables in a continuous line and without punctuation. The word “tanka” is a Japanese word meaning “short song”. It has a similar syllabic structure as haiku (5–7–5), but has two additional 7-syllable lines, making it 5–7–5–7–7.

For more on tanka poetry, see Brett Christensen article “Tanka Poetry — A Brief Introduction” and my own article and series of 21 tanka, “Tarot and Tanka: The Major Arcana”.

Throughout the month of June, I‘m taking the Know Thyself, Heal Thyself 30 Day Poetry Challenge, with thanks to Diana C. Thanks also to Tree Langdon for inspiring me to take part.
