A Tanka of Two Broken Hearts

That one thing that broke me from the inside

One call changed it all,

and shattered me deep inside.

A broken heart for

a heart that had been broken,

and a world turned upside down.

I will never forget the morning I received a phone call from my father telling me that my mother had died of a sudden catastrophic heart ailment while I had been fast asleep on the other side of the world.

My mother was my best friend in the whole world, and her loss still hurts like a million tiny cuts being scoured with rock salt and lemon juice. There are so many things I wish I could talk to her about. She was the one constant force of love in my life, and the one person who truly “got” me.

The love is still there, of course; that doesn’t go away. And I often get the feeling that she is watching, even guiding me, and that is a comforting thought (although the skeptic in me suspects it is just wishful thinking on my part).
