I Aimed for 5,000 Walking Steps in January
This is what happened
I wrote about my New Year’s resolutions.
One of the things I said I would try to do was keep a record of my walking exercise for the first month of the year and see how it goes. My aim was to reach 5,000 steps per walking exercise.
Jan 1st, 2022
Very bright outside during the day, and I only decided to take a walk right before dinner. Before getting too dark, I quickly stopped what I was doing. I put my socks on, got out, and got some walking done.
It was a great walk because it helped me clear my mind. I was able to do what I wasn’t able to before the walk.
The total steps for the day were 4,418 steps.
Jan 2nd
I moved around consciously to have enough walking steps — aiming for five-thousand steps.
As before, I was half watching TV, doing this and that. It turned out I walked more than yesterday.
The total steps for the day were 4,944 steps.
Jan 3rd
After an early dinner, I took a walk.
It was good weather — people were taking their dogs for a walk, rubbing their back/giving them a good back massage on their porch. Yap, I saw happy people and happy doggies.
Not a long walk, and not too short either. It was a good walk and got 4,478 steps!
Jan 4th
I took a good walk and shopped my essentials. A total of 7,643 steps!
Jan 5th
Today, I got 3,076 steps by just doing some walking indoors.
Jan 6th
Despite the weather forecast, the weather was stable in the evening, so I took a short walk. Some people were even running. They got their exercise plan, as I do for sure, I thought. Or, somehow, they thought the weather was perfect for their running.
Either way, it’s always nice to see other people were also doing their exercise while I was doing mine, walking. A total of 5,608 steps today.
Jan 7th
Walking indoors.
I was making steps while watching TV shows.
Who has been wanting to have stew? Watch some cooking shows then. I was watching a sports game.
Watching a professional sports game on TV and making steps again. I did some stretching during commercial breaks and between their small breaks.
I then made 4,221 steps by the end of the day.
Jan 8th
Walking indoors. It’s just because my walking shoes are still wet. I took care of golden fish and mosquito fish.
5,099 steps for today.
Jan 9th
I had a good walk in nice weather. I got over 8,000 steps for the day, and I was so ready to go to bed after having a yummy quiche with a bit of meat and onions. By the end of the day, I got 8,853 steps.
Jan 10th
I took it easy from yesterday’s walk. 3,477 steps for the day.
Jan 11th
Shopping & walking, I GOT 10,000 steps!
I haven’t had this number over 10,000 steps for a long time. By the end of the day, I got 10,307 steps!!
Jan 12th
A good job for me! I got 6,765 steps! I just continuously moved, making steps indoors for about 45 minutes.
Jan 13th
While walking, my phone was also updating, it consumed so much battery. I had to charge. I only got 2,703 steps.
Jan 14th
I had to take a break. My smartphone says I only got 1,623 steps.

Jan 31st
5,187 steps! Yappy!
I walked over 5,000 steps on the last day of January!
Around mid-January, I started to add a new exercise.
My legs up & down exercise.
How did I do it?
First, lying on my bed with my legs straight, then move one leg up and down within 2 or 3 seconds 5 to 10 times. And do the same for the other leg.
Next, I bring my leg up very slowly, spending around 5 seconds, and bring my leg down slowly, spending another 5 seconds. Ten times for each leg (take a rest whenever I need it).
Especially for those days, I wasn’t able to go out and reach the 5,000-step goal. I did this up & down leg exercise — 10 times two sets.
I also found this up & down exercising is very comforting after having done walking over 5,000 steps a day. It releases the tension of my calf muscles. And it feels so great!
And yet it still strengthens the parts I didn’t use while doing my walking exercises, such as abdominal muscle and quadriceps group of muscles.
Since January, I’m still continuing my good habit. But I’m actually doing better! Better than any two weeks of January. My daily average of this month so far is 5,605 steps!
Wrapping Up
So, I tried what I said in my New Year’s resolutions — aim for 5,000 steps when I do my walking exercises and keep a record of it.
The result of it is this. My smartphone says my daily average steps for January was 5,293 steps!! Although there were days when I tried to walk and didn’t reach 5,000 steps, that was something expected. By the end of the month, as long as the daily average was 5,000 steps or more, I’m happy.
That’s how to motivate to do it better.
What I can say is this.
If you tried to make a goal or aim, which should not be too harsh on yourself, and if you tried to write down and keep the record of it, it would help you achieve, or at least close to it.
