To Masturbate or Not To Masturbate?
NoFap- Is it worth it?
NoFap, men abstaining from masturbation by men has been very hyped for a few years now. Most Nofap gurus recommend a duration of 90 days. What is the benefit? Is there one at all? In this article, I will get to the heart of the matter.
The advantages cited by NoFap fans
When you listen to what proponents of Nofap say about the effects, it sounds almost too good to be true. Numerous physical and mental benefits are reported. Some of the most important ones are these:
Physical Benefits
- Increased energy
- Muscle growth
- Better sleep
- Improved sperm quality
Mental Benefits
- Increased motivation
- Increased willpower
- Less stress and anxiety
- Increased confidence
These effects could actually be explained by increased testosterone levels. The question is whether and how much Nofap increases testosterone levels.
Here is a quote from this article on www.masculinedevelopment.com. It clarifies quite well the reasoning that the supporters of the Nofap movement apply.
Dopamine is one of the key neurotransmitters in every man’s brain. It regulates your MOTIVATION to achieve, to conquer, to do great things… and when sex, masturbation, and porn screw this up, you’re screwed.
Think about it. How can you ever overcome a significant challenge in life, gain more power, and grow your physical strength, if you don’t even have the MOTIVATION to do so? With dopamine addiction, you can’t.
Do not delay your greatness any longer. There is a community of men on Reddit that will help you overcome your addiction to porn, sex, and masturbation. Every man will benefit from no fap, on a physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual level.
Can these effects be scientifically proven?
A 2003 study shows that Nofap can actually increase testosterone levels by 45%. However, the peak is reached on the 7th day and then the testosterone level drops again.
On the 7th day of abstinence, however, a clear peak of serum testosterone appeared, reaching 145.7% of the baseline ( P < 0.01).
Otherwise, however, the study situation is such that one can not necessarily assume an enormous physical effect and the few proven effects occur within the first week, which is why the recommended duration of 90 days can not be scientifically justified.
Other possible reasons for Nofap
The scientific evidence on this subject suggests that men who have no problem with their sexuality and masturbation do not necessarily have a reason to start practicing Nofap. What you can’t deny is that Nofap definitely strengthens self-control. Especially for men who masturbate very frequently and compulsively, Nofap can therefore be worth a try.
Moreover, we know that the placebo effect is also incredibly powerful. It may be a possible explanation for the reported effects of followers of the Nofap movement. If you are a firm believer in Nofap and proud of your self-discipline, you may be able to feel the effects mentioned above.
Downsides of Nofap
However, Nofap could also pose health risks. A study which was published in the journal European Urology shows that regular ejaculations reduce the risk of prostate cancer.
In addition, men who practice Nofap have to do without other positive effects of regular ejaculations. These are among others:
- Stress reduction
- Positive effect on the immune system
- Reduced risk of dying from heart disease
Summary
Scientifically, the hype around Nofap is not justified. While it is certainly recommended for men who need to masturbate compulsively to turn this off, there is no scientific reason for the rest of men to stop masturbating. Since regular ejaculations are considered healthy, Nofap might even carry risks.
