Summary

The website content discusses the romantic tradition of couples affixing padlocks to bridges and throwing away the keys to symbolize eternal love, while also noting the environmental and structural concerns this practice raises.

Abstract

The tradition of attaching love padlocks to bridges, believed to have originated in Italy, involves writing initials on a lock, securing it to a bridge, and discarding the key into the river below to signify unbreakable love. Despite its romantic connotations, this practice has negative environmental impacts from the keys thrown into rivers and can structurally endanger bridges burdened by the weight of numerous locks. Some locations have started to impose fines to deter the practice, prompting a reconsideration of how love is symbolized and celebrated. The article also encourages sharing love, joy, and happiness in other ways and references the October challenge prompt by Sandi Parsons, inviting more responses to the theme of "Collections."

WRITING PROMPT RESPONSE

Throw Away the Key to Seal the Love

October Six Word Photo Story Challenge: “Collections”

Collections of love hanging on together.

It’s a tradition probably originating somewhere in a university in Italy. Of course, Italy is the symbol of all romance. But what is it about all those padlocks hanging on bridges across the world?

The tradition says to write the initials of you and your lover onto the padlock, mount it then on the ropes of a bridge, and throw the keys into the river flowing below.

You don’t want to open that lock again because that would mean the end of your love. Which is why the keys get thrown away. This tradition is supposed to represent love until eternity for the couple.

But next to the environmental aspect of throwing keys into a river, these locks also cause danger. While one padlock wouldn’t break a bridge, of course, there are bridges in the world where so many locks have been mounted, the bridge is now weighing several tons more.

In some countries and in some locations, you will risk a fine when attempting to mount your padlock of love. So be careful and maybe think of other traditions or actions to seal your endless love.

Until then, I’m sharing the message of the above collections found on the Baltic coast of Poland.

Share love, joy and happiness in the world.
