Three Ways To Avoid FOBO

There are so many variations out there, such as FOMO (Fear of Missing Out), FOPO (Fear of Other People’s Opinions), and now FOBO (Fear of Being Obsolete).
AI and the workplace landscape are changing faster than anyone could have imagined. With all the hype, you wouldn’t be wrong in thinking we will all be replaced by AI. However, it’s not true..for now.
Yesterday’s mindset is already Obsolete for tomorrow’s world
The rise of artificial intelligence (AI) has brought about a significant change in the way work is conducted. Over the last decade, we’ve seen gradual changes, but as technology has become sophisticated, it’s gathered in pace and changed the work environment right before our eyes.
What does this mean? What you learned yesterday won’t be enough to deal with the challenges of tomorrow.
What’s even more surprising is how quickly this lack of positioning creeps up on you, too. How? It’s easy to leave learning off for ‘Maybe Tomorrow’, but there’s a significant danger: you end up playing the never-ending catch-up game.
You know as well as I do that the business world is changing quickly and before our eyes. Don’t be put off by it, though. Instead, embrace the change and do your bit by jumping into the driving seat.

Mindset Shift
As Humans, we are resistant to change. However, in the AI era, flexibility and adaptability are assets. Rather than viewing AI as a threat, seeing it as a tool that can enhance human capabilities is vital.
Therefore, it pays to engage in Lifelong Learning. Why? With AI, the goalposts are continually shifting. Adopting a mindset of lifelong learning ensures that individuals remain agile and informed.

- Learning Comes in Many Forms
Gone are the days when the classroom provided the majority of learning. That’s not the case anymore because learning is everywhere, online, offline, on-site, offsite. It just depends on you and your preferred learning style.
Update your knowledge. Read and find out what’s going on in your industry. Know the challenges your business/industry faces today and tomorrow. Be informed so you remain competitively positioned.
No One Is Coming To Rescue You. Not your manager, CEO or even the shareholders. No one. So what can you do? Lots.
Firstly, you can jump into the Driving Seat Of Your Career. How? It requires being proactive in learning and seeking new skills, and you can do this by jumping onto the playing field instead of watching from the sidelines.
Remember, you’ve got more choices than you think you do. When you jump into the driving seat of your learning, your powerhouse will help you face tomorrow with greater confidence.
2. Keep An Eye On Your Industry
Talk to colleagues and management. You’ll be surprised how much knowledge they possess, too. If that doesn’t tick the box, there are plenty of vocational courses you could do to complement your knowledge toolbox.
The playing field is fun because that’s where the action is. Try picking projects and causes which help you stretch and grow regularly, not just once in a while.
If you’re not in a position to do so, then get that learning outside through different volunteering projects or set up a commercial hobby so you get to fine-tune your skills practically. Not only will you learn whilst doing this, but you’ll up-skill regularly, plus an added benefit is that it is an attractive quality admired by employers.
3. Making Your Online Brand Works For You
People buy people based on trust. An online presence, especially on LinkedIn, will enhance your brand and help you build trust with an audience who doesn’t know you.
Be Proud Of Your Online Brand. You don’t need to be an influencer or showbiz icon to think about your online presence. Anyone and everyone who has access to the internet can build a personal or professional brand. I believe it’s a great way to document your journey, especially if you’re aspiring for more visibility.
However, creating your online brand doesn’t happen by magic. Instead, you have to do your bit to craft your legacy because no one has a vested interest in your career than you. It is easy to get complacent, but in today’s world, you can be anything except complacent.

Whether it’s FOMO or FOBO, you have more control than you think. Whatever you do, don’t go on autopilot. If you do, you might miss out on the action on the playing field. Whether you like it or not, that’s where the action is and where you’ll pick up skills, experience and knowledge for your next step.
Those who think safe and play safe won’t be willing to solve complex problems facing humanity today.
I believe when you get better, the opportunities improve too. It’s a win/win. Now is not the time to lower expectations.
