This Week’s Prompt: 8–14.06

All things silence.

Good morning/afternoon/evening, now and forever!

Anyone who’s ever made the choice, either consciously or unconsciously, to sit in silence for a few minutes, hours or days is aware that revelations often stem from it. Silence is a form of meditation that doesn’t require much effort or awareness. It simply happens, if we allow it to.

Depending on our traumas and fears, sitting in silence can be a pleasant, comfortable experience or one that makes us feel inadequate. Some of us are so used to the background noise caused by the TV, radio, kids running around the house or to the voice of our talkative partner, that we may not even realize how uncomfortable we are with silence. Only when the opportunity arises (and it does arise every now and then, surely) to have some time by ourselves is the moment we either decide to play some music or to sit quite happily listening to…Nothing.

There’s a lot of depth, knowledge and wisdom in nothing. I’ve come to understand that one of the reasons we avoid sitting is silence is because we fear death. How are the two linked together? Well, that’s for each of us to figure out on our own, if we choose to reflect upon this matter. To me, they’re synonyms because they both make me aware of the void within. I’m learning to see the beauty of this void, of this state of nothingness, stripped off of everything, yet completely at peace…

Long story short, this week’s prompt is an encouragement towards meditation/a silence break. Here are a few aspects to touch on, if you shall choose to do so:

  1. How does silence make you feel?
  2. What has it taught you about yourself?
  3. Is silence linked to death? How?
  4. How do you meditate?

As always, be as creative as you wish! Looking forward to reading your content.
