All things shadow self.

Good morning/afternoon/evening, now and forever!

Spooky season is upon us! Halloween is coming up, but I hope you’ll stay safe during this celebration. It is definitely one of my favorites (yeah, I am very much into creepy things).

Therefore, I thought what better prompt to accompany the spooky season than the SHADOW self. A lot of the topics we touch upon are lighthearted, yet a lot of them aren’t. This one definitely isn’t…However, we ought to embrace both the light and darkness in the world. Refusal to acknowledge both doesn’t mean they don’t exist.

A few years ago, I was in a very dark place mentally and emotionally. Nowadays, nobody believes me when I tell them, but it’s true. The thing is, I decided I didn’t wanna live like that anymore. I am a naturally a joyful person who loves life and that phase I was in was just that…a phase. I listened to what my shadow self had to teach me and later realized it is a conscious choice we make everyday upon awakening: In what colors am I choosing to paint life today? Yes, there are still times when my energies are low and life is grey. That’s okay! I wouldn’t be able to write poetry if it wasn’t for those days.

My point is, by embracing our shadow self (everything we repress, deny, dismiss, refuse to accept about ourselves) we allow ourselves to discover more about our traumas, patterns, etc. and peel off yet another layer. By delving deep within, in the most hidden corners of the self, we bring ourselves closer to light. It sounds counter intuitive…I know.

Long story short, I want you to write about whatever comes to mind when you hear “shadow self”. Don’t be afraid to explore and embrace whatever surfaces. There is no right or wrong. There just is!

Looking forward to reading your articles! Take care.
