This piece is an excellent example of an essay done right. From the intriguing title and subtitle to the story filled with humor, heart, and nostalgic details.
I adored this story of love, mistakes, and injustice. Toya’s prose is poetic, honest, and sexy. From the first line to the last, this story is beautifully written and evocative.
This piece shows us that life lessons can come in unexpected ways and sources. I love the details, the straightforward language, and the humor in this piece.
I always look forward to an Annie Forbes Cooper story. I enjoy how she takes us on an adventure back to another time and place. There’s nostalgia, but the messages are evergreen.
Everything in this story is vivid and alive, from the sounds the clock makes to the author’s grandmother. This is a story of love, family, and loss that pulls on the heartstrings but makes us glad for the special people in our lives.
Put your parka on when you read this story as the author strikingly captures freezing icy weather as he tells the story of when he made a foolish mistake that could have cost him his life.

Thanks to Christine for sharing her picks!
