Summary

The author argues that motivation alone is insufficient for a productive life; instead, actionable productivity is key.

Abstract

The article titled "This Is the Reason I Don’t Believe In Motivation" presents a critical view of motivation, asserting that it is not an actionable means to an end. The author, Aldric, shares personal experiences of feeling motivated by videos and speeches from successful individuals, including Gary Vee, but not seeing any tangible results in his life. He compares the temporary high of motivation to smoking, suggesting that both provide a fleeting sense of well-being without real progress. Aldric emphasizes that life's complexity means generic advice from others often leads to failure. Instead, he advocates for a focus on productivity, asserting that working more leads to achieving more, which is a timeless truth. The author concludes by encouraging readers to prioritize productivity over motivation, as it is the true catalyst for change and improvement in life.

This Is the Reason I Don’t Believe In Motivation

In short — It is not actionable.

Many of us believe that motivation is key to a fruitful life. If we are motivated, we feel more alive, and we get more done, am I right?

I beg to differ. Pretty honestly and brutally.

I have been through some downtimes myself, you know, the down and out moments. Those days where everyone thinks you are a bum and there is nothing to show?

Yup, I had times when I was floating around with no purpose.

So, I did what many people tell me. Watch motivational videos on YouTube. Listen to the billionaires touting about finding their North Star and never to work again. Of course, then there is the insane personality known as Gary Vee.

I always feel pumped after listening to them. And in truth, that is about it.

I felt motivated, but nothing else came out of it. That was when I figured the limit to motivation. If motivation is the end of the means, it is nothing more than a feel-good adrenaline pump.

For some reason, I think it has a parallel with smoking. You feel good, and then that is it.

In fact, life is so complex that plagiarizing life lessons from others leads to remarkable failure and a waste of time.

Some of us extract actionable takeaways from motivational videos and self-help books. Others do not. It is like reading history. Perspectives are formed from our individual interpretations.

Instead, we have to focus on productivity if we aim to lead a fruitful life.

There is one truism in this crazy World.

If we work more, there is the possibility that we will get more. That has always rhymed true in our history and will continue to chime so into our future.

Unless feeling motivated leads to a productivity outcome — Focus on being productive instead.

Motivation can only go so far.

I used to be a bum. Then I watched a lot of motivational YouTube clips. I became a motivated bum. That was it.

Not one iota of my life changed because I got more motivated.

However, when I work more — I see the difference in terms of income and my quality of life. Focus on increasing our productivity. It works far better than motivation.

Productivity is the Holy Grail!
