Chief Dan George

If you’ve been born in the last few decades, you may not have heard of this talented actor who came to the big screen at the ripe old age of 60 years old. You can catch this memorable Indigenous actor in some big-name movies, starring famous names like Clint Eastwood and Dustin Hoffman.

Chief Dan was a chief of the Tsleil-Waututh Nation, a Coast Salish band, whose Indian reserve is located in Vancouver, BC. He got his start at the age of 60 years old, landing an acting role in a TV series.

At 71 years, he received several honors for his role in the movie, Little Big Man. He received a nomination for best supporting actor for his part in this historical movie.

Colonel Sanders

Colonel Harland David Sanders was an American businessman, best known for being the founder of the popular restaurant chain Kentucky Fried Chicken. Born in 1890, the Colonel did many jobs over the years, and times were tough. He even got fired for insubordination after he got sick.

During his time as a restaurant owner, he worked on his chicken recipe, and one day he came to the realization that pressure cooking chicken and using his “secret recipe” would be the key to his success. At the age of 62 years, he franchised his recipe for the first time to the operator of one of Salt Lake City’s largest restaurants.

The Colonel went to work, convincing other restaurant owners to become franchisees, and that approach was successful. KFC was one of the first restaurant chains to expand internationally, branching out to Canada, the UK., Australia, and Mexico.

Grandma Moses

Born in 1860, Anna Mary Robertson Moses, was an American Folk artist. When most people are taking it easy, Moses started painting at the ripe age of 78 years.

Why such a late start? Moses had lots to do when she was young, working on the farm, and never had time to pursue hobbies. Her creative outburst and her skills allowed her to generate 1,500 canvases in 3 decades.

One of her paintings sold for US $1.2 million in 2006.

Fauja Singh

Born in Beas Pind, Jalandhar, Punjab, British India on 1 April 1911, Singh did not walk until he was five years old, as his legs were too skinny to balance his body weight. As he built up his strength, he became an amateur runner but gave it up during the time of the Partition of India.

At 89 years, he took to running and took part in international marathon events. At the age of 93, he finished a marathon in 6 hours and 54 minutes.

On Oct 16, 2011, he became the first 100-year-old to finish a marathon. He retired from running at 102 years old.

Still Going Strong

Joe Biden, current President of the United States. Biden, Jr. was born November 20, 1942, making him 80 years old.

Sir Paul McCartney of the famous Beatles band shows no signs of slowing down. McCartney is also 80 this year, and there are no reports he’s retired yet. In December 2020, he released his album McCartney 111, which landed him at number 2 on the US Billboard 200.

If you go to his concert, pay attention if you arrive early. At one of his shows, we arrived 30 minutes before the show started, and there was a blinking sign asking fans to text him a kind message before he took the stage. I did, and the person sitting next to me didn’t even notice the sign — he was busy texting someone!

Madonna

Whether you love her or hate her, Madonna, 63, still moves with the lightness of the finest athlete, and her high-energetic performances on stage continue to delight audiences. Her decades of being in show business haven’t slowed her down.

Some of her songs and videos may cause controversy, but there’s no denying that she has the talent to provide she’s even better after 60 years old!

If you go to her concert: get dressed up in some disco glitz and start dancing! Madonna pays attention to her fans by giving them a chance to be up in front on stage and get closer to her! At one of her shows, we arrived a bit early to get some drinks. She had a mini stage next to her stage and before her real show started, a lot of people would start dancing to the preshow music near their seats. These people were dressed up in nightclub glitzy outfits and Madonna’s assistant's hand chose a few people to dance on her mini stage! These concert-goers even bought the snooze seats or cheaper seats and they got a night to remember!

My Dad didn’t start ballroom dancing until he retired at 65 years old. I really believe that age is just a number. What do you think?
