The World That We Live In

The meaning of life — A little bit of everything

Photo by Jonas Verstuyft on Unsplash

There are times when I ask myself the meaning of life. The meaning of being alive and being aware of being alive. How can I continue living, setting goals, planning for the future when I know that I’m going to die one day. How to make sense of this world and figure out why I’m here.

This certainly isn’t an easily answerable question. There are times when we have an optimistic answer and times when we are pessimistic and just want our time to come to an end. There are times when we love everything and everyone on this earth and times when we don’t want to set eyes on a living soul and want everything to burn.

There are times when we feel like we have the power to make true our biggest dreams. We feel like if we want to, we can do it. And there are times when we have lost the ability to dream of anything and have no goals in life. We feel lost and feel like everyone is doing well except us. We feel like there is no reason to live.

There are times when everything goes our way — we make every green light and feel like our feet is hovering above the ground. And there are times when nothing goes our way. We hit every red light and we feel infuriated because it seems like the world is against us.

“How can I continue living, setting goals, planning for the future when I know that I’m going to die one day.”

There are times when nothing that happens seems to be able to disturb us. We take everything in a good way, even the comments made to hurt us. And there are times when every single little thing has the power to hurt us. Even the ones aimed to uplift us.

There are times when we think we have found the meaning of life and want to spend an eternity here on this earth and times when life has no meaning and there is no reason to live when we know we are going to die.

This is life. All of it. We want it to happen in a linear line but that is only the story we tell ourselves. Life’s reality is different and includes a little bit of everything. The “good” things and the “bad” things.

Unfortunately, I can’t end this piece with my answer on the meaning of life. I don’t know how to answer this question in regards to my life let alone recommending something to you. But what I do know from experience is that maybe, kindness, togetherness, and love for one another will help us during our time here on earth and maybe, give our life some kind of meaning. Maybe…

“Whether it is good or evil, whether life in itself is pain or pleasure, whether it is uncertain-that it may perhaps be this is not important-but the unity of the world, the coherence of all events, the embracing of the big and the small from the same stream, from the same law of cause, of becoming and dying.” ― Hermann Hesse, Siddhartha
